Tall Buttercup

This plant was introduced from Europe and grows in the wild here in moist areas along roads, pastures and open woods.

Unidentified plant

I found this quite small plant down by a small creek in Big Hill Springs park yesterday. This park is NW of Calgary and it was the first time I had ever been there before. A beautiful place to explore! This plant looks like a member of the Mustard family but I'm sure I have never seen it before. I seem to remember that the leaves were very narrow and long. If anyone is able to ID it for me, I would be very grateful!

A heart for Jan

Came across all sorts of interesting little "bits and pieces" yesterday at Big Hill Springs park, NW of the city. Found this heart-shaped leaf lying in the forest and thought of you, Jan!

Leafhopper

I came across these two tiny green insects at Big Hill Springs park (outside the city to the north west) on Tuesday morning. Would love to know what they are - haven't been able to find them yet. Doug - do you have any ideas by any chance? I'm sure they are very common little creatures, but I'm sure I haven't seen them before.

Mother Nature's creation

I will have to look for leaves that have a slightly more photogenic shape to them, but meanwhile, the mixture of red and green on this leaf caught my eye. Seen at Big Hill Springs park on Tuesday, when I was lucky enough to accompany a small group of people who went there to pull weeds. They did an amazing job, turning a weed infected area into a place of much greater beauty! Thanks, Erika!

Northern Gentian

This very dainty wildflower was growing at Big Hill Springs park, just NW of Calgary. Also known as Felwort. "Felwort has been used as a tonic medicine since the 1st century AD. Some sources report Felwort to be a purgative, while others indicate that it stimulates appetite in people suffering from Anorexia, old age and stomach ailments." From "Plants of Alberta" by France Royer and Richard Dickinson.

Green Comma

Not sure if this is a Satyr Anglewing or a Green Comma. Seen at Big Hill Springs park, just NW of Calgary, on 21st August 2007. Note on 1st September 2007: thanks, Ron (Ron Wolf) for the positive ID!

"If you truly love Nature, you will find beauty everywhere." Vincent Van Gogh. This pretty Tall Buttercup is an introduced plant from Europe. This species grows from June to September.

Big Hill Springs park

This is part of Big Hill Springs park, NW of Calgary, out past Cochrane. It was the first time I had ever been there and it really is a beautiful park to visit and explore. The tumbling streams and waterfalls made it quite a unique place.
