Sparrow's-egg Orchid

22 Apr 2015 208
These are rarely found in Calgary, but I was one of several people privileged to be shown some of these beautiful, delicate flowers at Lawrey Gardens, Edworthy Park, on 29 June 2010. "This delicate lady's-slipper is a pleasant find. Often occurring in moist areas along trails, it has 4 or 5 lily-like leaves tightly clasping the stem and slowly spreading outward. The white flower head looks like a white egg bursting out of a green case. Flower: The flower has a green sepal rising above, almost hiding the white pouch. There are two white lateral wings and a white pouch with purple spots inside. The flower head is approximately 1 cm long." From MountainNature.com.

Mealy Primrose

07 Jul 2008 171
This is an uncommon wildflower in the city, so we were very lucky to be shown it again this year. I never seem to be able to get a sharp photo of it, so then have to wait a whole year for my next chance : ) The flowering stem, which is 10-40 cm tall, is covered in white powder. The pale lilac to pink flowers themselves are 6-10 mm across, so only very tiny. The plant grows in sloughs, calcareous bogs and saline meadows.

These are rarely found in Calgary, but I was one of several people privileged to be shown some of these beautiful, delicate flowers last summer. "This delicate lady's-slipper is a pleasant find. White Cinquefoil

07 Jul 2009 162
I'm not quite sure why I like White Cinquefoil so much. There is something almost old-fashioned about it - and I love "modern". I don't get to see it very often. I find the individual flowers are really pretty. This plant was growing at Edworthy Park, at the Lawrey Gardens end.

Butter-and-eggs / Linaria vulgaris

27 Feb 2013 175
This plant was growing at Edworthy Park, at the Lawrey Gardens end, on 1 July 2009. Yet another photo from my archives, that I never got round to posting. Also known as Common Toadflax, this plant was introduced from Europe as a garden plant, but has now become an aggressive weed. www.invasiveplants.ab.ca/Downloads/FS-CommonToadflax.pdf en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linaria_vulgaris

Red-leaf Rose / Rosa rubrifolia

28 Jul 2012 152
Photographed this non-native Rose at Lawrey Gardens, Edworthy Park, on 4 July 2012. This species is native to the mountains of central and southern Europe.

Asparagus Beetle

08 Jul 2009 179
When I saw my very first tiny Asparagus Beetle, I thought it was a Ladybug. Isn't it cute? They are such attractive, bright orange, little things with their many black spots. Next time you see an Asparagus plant, take a careful look : )

White Cinquefoil

07 Jul 2008 129
White Cinquefoil is a member of the Rose family and is yet another wildflower that I see rarely.

Stickseed

29 Dec 2007 118
A photo of the wildflower, Stickseed", from my archives, to make a change from Zoo photos! I know this is Stickseed, but I'm not sure if it's Showy Stickseed (Hackelia floribunda). Floribunda, of course, means "abundantly flowered".

Sparrow's-egg lady's-slipper

29 Jun 2007 92
We were shown several patches of these unusual Orchids this morning, at Lawrey Gardens, Edworthy Park. I had never seen one of these Orchids till very recently, so was very happy to finally know what they are like. I love knowing that these are wildflowers.

White Camas 2

04 Jul 2007 128
White Camas, also known as Mountain Death Camas and Smooth Camas. One of my favourite wildflowers. Taken with my old Olympus C750 UZ camera on 30th June 2007.

Sparrow's-egg lady's-slipper

02 Jul 2007 108
"Passerinum" means "sparrow", referring to the lip's resemblance to a sparrow's egg. Also known as Northern Lady's-slipper. This beautiful orchid is found in very few places in this city.

Goat's-beard versus Meadow Goat's-beard

02 Jul 2007 134
This photo shows some of the differences between the more common Goat's-beard (on the left) and the Meadow Goat's-beard (on the right). Both are invasive species, especially the Goat's-beard.

Mealy Primrose

02 Jul 2007 116
This teeny member of the Primrose family has five deeply notched, pale lilac to pink petals. The stems are less than 12 cm tall and the flowers are 10-20 mm across. I have tried on three occasions to phtoograph these tiny flowers and now finally give up any hope of ever getting a sharp photo, LOL!

Small Wood Anemone

03 Jul 2007 101
This wildflower has been found in only one place in this city and I was lucky enough to be shown it the other day.

Stickseed

03 Jul 2007 113
This pretty, tiny blue flower belongs to the Borage family.

White Camas

04 Jul 2007 123
These White Camas are one of my favourite wildflowers, especially when I look closely at a single white flower (even if it's not as sharp as it could be!). Taken with my old Olympus C750 UZ camera on 30th June 2007.

Small butterfly

04 Jul 2007 95
There are a number of tiny butterflies here and I am never sure exactly what kind I am looking at. So, I am safer to attempt no ID!
