Three-flowered Avens has three of these flowers on each plant. When they get closer to going to seed, the flower heads (which normally are hanging) turn upwards like in my image. This wildflower is in bloom at the moment in many places. When the flower is ready to go to seed, the three flower heads point upwards and turn into a mass of long, thin hairs. Also called Old Man's Whiskers or Prairie Smoke.
