Gray Jay

When I was out in the mountains yesterday with friends at the Golden Eagle Migration area near Mt. Lorette, two or three of these curious Gray Jays flew down to check us out. A lot of low cloud and low light, so my photos aren't as good as I wish they had been, but it was so nice to actually see a bird reasonably close, unlike the Golden Eagles, which were little more than very distant specks. The Gray Jay (Perisoreus canadensis) is also called "Camp Robber", "Canada Jay" and "Whiskeyjack". "The Gray Jay, Perisoreus canadensis, is a member of the crow and jay family (Corvidae) found in the boreal forests across North America north to the tree-line and in subalpine forests of the Rocky Mountains south to New Mexico and Arizona.... To the delight of modern campers, many individual Gray Jays quickly learn that we can be an excellent source of food, even coming to the hand for bread, raisins, or cheese." From Wikipedia.

Goldenrod

This was one of the photos I took (that turned out OK!) up in the mountains yesterday, on a trip to the location near Mt. Lorette, where the Golden Eagles fly during migration. All you see are small specks in the sky, flying just above the mountain peaks. Fascinating, but no good for photos of course. Some people did see several Eagles through a scope, but I was busy wandering nearby, looking for something big enough to photograph : )

A scene of contrasts

A few fall colours to break the "monotony" of endless green forest and white, snowy peaks. Taken in the Mt. Lorette area of Kananaskis, in the Rocky Mountains, when I went on a Golden Eagle Migration outing.

Changing seasons

One of the fallen leaves in the Mt. Lorette area of Kananaskis, in the Rocky Mountains. It had snowed a bit and the snow had melted into very small blobs of ice. When these melted, the water droplets stayed where they were - didn't trickle down towards my fingers when I held the leaf.

The missing knot

Just a very simple image, but there was something that I liked about the shape, texture, lighting and (yay!) the blurred background, LOL. Found this piece of tree when I was in the Mt. Lorette area of Kananaskis (Rocky Mountains) mid-October.

Mt. Lorette area 2

These six photos show where I spent part of the day today! Not actually on these ski slopes, known as Nakiska, but in the area at the foot of Mt. Allan. Twice a year, Golden Eagles migrate over this area and the trip today was to see if we could see any of these amazing birds flying over. They appear only as tiny black specks to the naked eye. Actually, I think I was too focussed on the scenery and didn't see any Eagles, other than a Bald Eagle.
