A view from Kananaskis Village

Another one from my archives, September 2004! This is one of the many views from Kananaskis Village - spectacular in every direction.
"Kananaskis Country, established by the Alberta government in 1977, is just 90 kilometers (56 miles) southwest of Calgary. The Park encompasses over 5,000 square kilometers (2,600 square miles) of land, three provincial parks and some of Canada's most spectacular rolling terrain.
The name was first given, by 1858 explorer John Palliser, to the pass over the continental divide, in honour of a Cree amed Kineahkis who is said to have recovered from a blow to the head. Since then the name is given to a lake, a set of falls, a mountain range, an alpine village and a provincial park.
The word "Kananaskis" comes from an Indian word that means either "meeting of the waters" or "man with tomohawk in head". From foundlocally.com/Rockies/Travel/Near-Kananaskis.htm .
Ouch - these darned Mosquitoes!

Wish I could take credit for the timing, but I had to take quite a few shots to end up with ONE with its mouth open, mid-screech. Almost without fail, by the time my camera had processed an image, this little Columbian Ground Squirrel's mouth was closed again : ). Not sure if I noticed the Mosquito on its head when I was taking the photo. Saw this little guy/gal while we were enjoying (thoroughly enjoying!) a Strawberry Milkshake at Kananaskis Village after a day of hiking Ptarmigan Cirque Trail. Thanks Robin and Cedric! These Ground Squirrels are a different species from the Richardson's Ground Squirrels that are found in the city.

This photo was taken on 15th September 2004, at Kananaskis Village, in the mountains. The tiny "village" was built ready for the 1988 Winter Olympics. This is a small pond in between the hotels.

Kananaskis Village was built for the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary. It is just a small place, built part way up the mountain from the valley and fairly unobtrusive. Views from there are different all the way round. Guess what that is on the valley floor - a golf course, of all things!

This is just one of the many views seen from Kananaskis Village, which was built for the 1988 WInter Olympics. The scenery is superb!
