Low Larkspur

02 Jul 2008 154
Came across this beautifully coloured flower at the Eagle lookout/viewpoint at Brown-Lowery Park when I went there with a couple of friends on Monday. This was the only plant of this species we could see there. I think I've only ever seen this uncommon plant two or three times before, so it was a welcome find. Low Larkspur is very poisonous and cattle are often poisoned by this plant.

There were lots of little clusters of mushrooms at Brown-Lowery Provincial Park when I spent a few hours there with a friend yesterday. Thanks, D, for all the photo opportunities!

Red Baneberry

Photographed this Red Baneberry when I went to Brown-Lowery Provincial Park on Monday with a couple of friends. This member of the Crowfoot or Buttercup family has an attractive, white flower cluster, but its red or white berries are poisonous. Grows in deciduous and mixedwood forests.

I was lucky enough to be treated to a great day out today, cruising the rolling hills south of Calgary, to see what birds we could find. I say we, but I should correct that to "my friend", as he is the excellent birder and I am just a little beyond the level of "it was a large/small bird"! He found a Golden Eagle, Bald Eagles, several Rough-legged Hawks, Sharp-tailed Grouse (a flock of about 25 that landed in a field), perhaps around 50 Wild Turkeys (the only ones I had seen were at the Zoo!), a Hairy Woodpecker, and a couple of Three-toed Woodpeckers which were a first for me. These photos are really for my own record, not fine examples of good photography:)

The latter were deep in the forest of Brown-Lowery Park and my camera does not handle low light - hence the flash in its eye and a dark photo. My very first ones, though, so I'm still happy.
