Better late than never

This photo is mainly just as a record that I actually got out on a birding walk with a group of friends on 8 January 2018. My main reason for pushing myself out the front door was to catch up with friends. One look at the weather forecast for that week and I decided that, if I was going to head over to Carburn Park, I had better do it. The temperature was a balmy PLUS 1C-3C! Windchills for the next few days were in the -30Cs.
The light was not good for photos on this walk and most of the birds were very distant, as usual, at this location. Funny how it always works - if one is walking along the edge of the river, the birds are mainly on the far side. We did see 29 bird species, though.
This Christmas bauble was hanging, with others, on a tiny tree in the park, and I can never resist taking a quick shot or two if I come across things like this. As with a previous photo, I've 'removed' the ugly piece of green tubing that was threaded through the loop for hanging. I'd never seen a decoration like this one.
Later in the day, a friend very kindly picked me up and we went to the meeting about the recent Christmas Bird Counts. What an enormous amount of detail and facts are collected each year - most impressive and valuable!

UPDATE about our friend, Mike Kelly, who amazingly survived an horrific vehicle accident (broken jaw, broken ankle and two broken legs), east of the city, in brutal, -30C weather. One of the two wonderful good Samaritans who saved his life turned up at Mike's hospital room! This will be so good for Mike, as he really, really wanted to meet his two life-savers and thank them in person. Hopefully, he will still get the chance to meet his other hero. We are all so grateful!
Three rather uninspiring photos posted this morning, mainly just as a record that I actually got out on a birding walk with a group of friends yesterday morning. Quite a photographic leap from the hot rainforest of Trinidad (posted yesterday) to the cold, winter sights of Calgary. One look at the weather forecast for this week and I decided that, if I was going to head over to Carburn Park, I had better do it yesterday. We are supposed to get snow this evening, overnight and the next two days. Temperature this overcast morning is -7C (windchill -15C), so not too bad. Yesterday, on our walk, the temperature was a balmy 1C-3C!

Happy Christmas, everyone! Hope you all have a wonderful day today, both today (Christmas Eve) and tomorrow ( Christmas Day). Here in Calgary, it's 12:00 pm noon on 24 December 2014. The temperature is 0C (windchill -3C), and we are supposed to get a bit of snow this afternoon - just enough to cover the ice that still remains in places, making things rather treacherous. Very mild, though, compared to the brutally cold weather we had last winter. Hope these bright Christmas baubles, seen at the Spruce Meadows Christmas Market on 14 November, add a bit if warmth and cheer to your day.
For many people, Christmas is a very difficult time, for various reasons. My thoughts are with them and, as always, with those who for one reason or another will spend Christmas alone. To those of you who don't celebrate Christmas, I hope today and tomorrow will be happy ones for you.
Wishing you all a HAPPY CHRISTMAS and all the very best in the New Year! If you will be on the road, please don't drink and drive!
Christmas baubles

My youngest daughter and I went to the annual Spruce Meadows Christmas Market on 14 November 2014. This is where I saw this bright bunch of colourful Christmas baubles, hanging inside one of the small, temporary "shops".
Afterwards, on a short drive SW of the city, we stopped to photograph the row of five old, red granaries that are popular with local photographers. Unfortunately, not a cloud in the sky - clouds make for a more interesting shot. The farm was recently sold, so everyone is hoping that the new owners will leave these granaries standing. The gate was open yesterday and we could see several contractors working on something way out in the middle of the huge field.

I finally have my new COMPUTER up and running (kind of) after four weeks of total computer stress, complicated by the computer store mess-up, and surgery. Now I am discovering "the good, the bad and the ugly" of Windows 7! Definitely, the"ugly" would apply to the inability to manually rearrange photos in the order you want / need them!!! I am totally amazed and horrified that you can't do this. I searched the Internet and found forums full of endless complaints about this ridiculous issue, many going back to 2010. So, they still haven't changed it, after all this time. I would have thought it would be such a simple thing for Microsoft to change. Every time I want to find a photo, I have to look through many dozens, or more likely many hundreds, of tiny photo icons, trying to find the one photo I need. I would say that being able to arrange photos in the order I (and most photographers, no doubt!) need is one of the most important, necessary functions, so this is not good. If anyone has discovered a way to get round this or has any ideas to make it easier, I would LOVE to hear from you! THANKS!
Sometimes, when the birds are few and far between, and most definitely very distant, something else is spotted that makes my day : ) This Christmas bauble (?) was lying on the ice along the edge of the Bow River at Pearce Estate on 16 March 2014. Not sure if maybe someone had decorated a little Spruce tree in the park somewhere, or maybe it was there as a result of last June's Alberta Flood of the Century, washed out of someone's basement. Later that morning, though, another highlight of the day came in the form of three Great Horned Owlets and Mom! We had carpooled to nearby downtown, hoping that we might be able to find this beautiful little family and, sure enough, we were in luck. I posted a photo of one of the owlets the other day.
Happy Christmas, everyone!

Another Christmas bauble from a walk down in a local park, where someone had decorated one of the Spruce trees. Can't decide whether I like this one best, or the blue one that I posted recently : ) I like the tiny splashes of blue, red and gold in this one. Only six days left till Christmas now. For me, this will be the simplest Christmas I think I've ever had - haven't even put out my Christmas decorations this year. I am SO behind with absolutely everything, in general, that I know there is no way I can deal with Christmas things. The last few days of dizziness haven't helped : ) Not well-timed at all. For most of you who do celebrate Christmas, I'm sure the next few days will be hectic, though I hope you are able to find a little time to relax in between shopping, wrapping, baking, visiting, and so on. Have a healthy, safe and happy Christmas! May the New Year be a good one for each of you : ) And let's remember those who are less fortunate than ourselves. A special thought goes out to those of you who are unable to be with family or friends during the Christmas Season. Thank you all so much for being such good Flickr friends - your encouragement, inspiration and comments are priceless and appreciated so very much!!! Happy Christmas, everyone!

Good morning, everyone! Happy Christmas! Hope you all have a wonderful day. In Calgary, the temperature is -22C (-8F), with a windchilll of -32C (-26F), so I really hope you are warmer than we are here! What would Christmas be, without a bauble (even though my reflection had to be in it, showing me bending my knees to try and avoid one branch, but unable to avoid the one in my photo, lol? Taken on the annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count in Canmore, near Banff. Each year, someone hangs a handful of Christmas ornaments on a spindly little tree down near the Bow River.
For many people, Christmas is a very difficult time, for various reasons. My thoughts are with them, including all the people in Sandy Hook, Connecticut, who have suffered such a huge tragic loss in their community the last couple of weeks. I think most people, far and wide around the world, have been affected by this and have these folks in their thoughts and prayers. As always, those who, for one reason or another, will spend Christmas alone, will also be in my thoughts. To those of you who don't celebrate Christmas, I hope today will be a happy one for you. If you will be on the road, please don't drink and drive!
HAPPY CHRISTMAS and all the best in the New Year!

NO COMMENTS - this is just for my own record. I thoroughly enjoyed reading all your wonderful comments under the original photo! Do you think I can remember how to turn off the comments box? I need to write down the instructions, but also need to remember where I put the piece of paper they are written on, LOL. Oh, well, please, no comments ...
Happy Christmas, everyone!

I think this is the last of my Christmas bauble photos, taken down in Fish Creek Park a couple of weeks ago, so now I have blue, silver and gold : ) Wishing all of you who will celebrate tomorrow, a very Happy Christmas! To those who don't celebrate Christmas, I wish you a happy and safe day, too.

This strange ornament was in the new Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo. This huge room was full of Poinsettias, which you can see in the reflection. You can also see that several of these long rows of "fused" baubles radiate from a central spot. A peculiar shape, but creates interesting reflections. Hope your Christmas Day is going happily : )
Christmas in the park

Hope that all of you who celebrate Christmas are enjoying all your preparations. Less than two weeks now, so you'd better get busy : ) On a long, cold morning's walk in the park yesterday, we came across a tree that had been decorated with coloured baubles and ornaments. Loved the blue of this bauble and the reflection of the park - couldn't figure a way to exclude myself, LOL, so there I am, wearing T-shirt, sweater, fleece jacket, my bulky winter jacket, hat, hood, long-johns, jeans, two pairs of gloves, two pairs of socks and of course, my winter boots (plus ice-grabbers)! And it was only -12C!!! It's snowing again today - the beautiful, light, fluffy kind where you can see all the individual snowflakes. Light is so poor, so no use to try and take photos. Thank you to the person who spent time adding a little colour to the white landscape: ) I hope the birds enjoy it as much as I did.

Couldn't resist photographing the reflections in this silver bauble which was hanging on a tree at the Calgary Zoo today. Doesn't do too much for the ego - I know I was wearing my very thick, puffy winter jacket, but also the effect reminds me of the House of Mirrors!! LOL!
