African Blue-bellied Roller
04 Feb 2009 |
|
These are such beautiful birds (at the Calgary Zoo) - love the brilliant blue feathers that you can just see in the bottom right corner. Will post an image of the whole bird another time. They are called African Blue-bellied Rollers because of their aerial "rolling" during courtship and territorial displays. From Africa, these birds are found in Senegal and Gambia, to the Sudan. Shot through glass, which I never like doing.
Motherly love

Young Richard and presumably his mother at the Calgary Zoo. I watched such a beautiful display of affection among two adults and this young man - very nice to see. Richard's mother is named Mardi; she gave birth to him on November 15, 2006 at 2:25 am. Richard is the 14th giraffe born at the Calgary Zoo.
Colourful Kalanchoe

I thought these three colours of Kalanchoe looked so pretty, growing together in the Arid Room at the Calgary Zoo's Conservatory.
Superb Starling

This African bird flies freely in the Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo. It often likes to hang out in the Bougainvillea that grows right up and along the very high ceiling.
Ross's Turaco
01 Nov 2007 |
|
This brilliantly coloured bird was sitting in a tree inside the African tropical building at the Calgary Zoo. Each time I visit, I seem to be lucky with having one kind or another of tropical bird perched nearby, either in a small tree or sitting on the railing.
"Ross's Turaco (Musophaga rossae)
This is the second largest Turaco, and measures between 51 and 54 cm, weight between 390 and 444 grams. Impressive red erectile crest, yellow lores, and a yellow beak which stretches posteriorly to form a forehead shield. Inhabits woodlands from sea level to 2500 m, feeding off available fruits and arthropods."

Vulturine Guinea Fowl

Amazing birds, these Vulturine Guinea Fowl! The pattern and that gorgeous shade of blue make them so attractive. The one time I visited the Zoo, one of them flew up to the railing that I was leaning against and started walking towards me. It got so close, I was a little concerned for my camera (not to mention my eyes, as that looks like one wicked beak!).
Helmeted Guineafowl

One of the Helmeted Guineafowl at the Calgary Zoo. I also sw a couple of their babies, which were so cute.
"The Helmeted Guineafowl (Numida meleagris) is the best known of the guineafowl bird family, Numididae, and the only member of the genus Numida. It breeds in Africa, mainly south of the Sahara, and has been widely introduced into the West Indies and southern France." From Wikipedia.
Teething problems

Let me introduce you to baby Richard, a fairly new arrival at the Calgary Zoo. That's Mom in the background. Looks like he might be having a few teething problems, LOL!
Please give me a name

I'm not sure if this is a small African bird or not but it is one of the birds flying loose inside the Tropical Plant area in the Calgary Zoo's Conservatory. Can anyone tell me what bird this is?
"Pin-tailed Whydah male adult in breeding plumage has beautiful glossy black plumage on crown, upperparts and on very long tail feathers (about 20 cm). Wings are dark brown with conspicuous white marks. Cheeks, lower parts of face and underparts are white. Bill is bright crimson-red. Eyes are black. Legs and feet are dark.
Male and female in non breeding plumage have brown upperparts, strongly streaked with dark. Underparts are whitish with buff flanks. Buff face is boldly striped with dark. Female has brownish red bill. Male looses its long tail feathers during this period.
Immature resembles female, with rather uniform plumage and greyish bill." Taken, with thanks, from www.oiseaux.net .
