Jamaican Poinsettia / Euphorbia punicea

10 Oct 2015 256
This beautiful Jamaican Poinsettia shrub/tree is growing in the Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo. Photo taken on 6 October 2015. The west entrance to the Zoo will be closed from 13 October till April 2016, so I did want to get in another visit before then. I don't like the drive home on Deerfoot Trail from the north entrance, so tend not to go to the Zoo all winter. "Calgary's infamous freeway has taken the dubious top spot when it comes to this city's most dangerous place to drive." From the Calgary Sun. "Euphorbia punicea, the Jamaican Poinsettia, has long red bracts with golden yellow flowers. Although it still contains a poisonous latex, which can be converted to the equivalent of gasoline, it is popular with honeybees and butterflies." www.u4ba.nl/articles/euphorbia_punicea.htm

Christmas bling

This strange ornament was in the new Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo. This huge room was full of Poinsettias, which you can see in the reflection. You can also see that several of these long rows of "fused" baubles radiate from a central spot. A peculiar shape, but creates interesting reflections. Hope your Christmas Day is going happily : )

In gentle folds

Two small water droplets on a gorgeous red Poinsettia bract. "Because of their groupings and colors, laypeople often think these (red bracts) are the flower petals of the plant. In fact, the flowers are grouped within the small yellow structures found in the center of each leaf bunch, and they are called cyathia. Euphorbia pulcherrima, commonly known as poinsettia, is a species of flowering plant indigenous to Mexico. The name "poinsettia" is after Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first United States Minister to Mexico, who introduced the plant into the US in 1828. It is also called the Atatürk flower." From Wikipedia.

Red hot

Well, rather an orangey-red (and not as sharp as it should be), but I desperately needed something - anything! - that looked hot on this frigid, winter day. By midday, the wind chill temperature was up to -39C. Far too cold, dangerously cold, to go out anywhere, so I found what I could in my home that I could photograph. This is a leaf off a Poinsettia plant that I bought through a fundraiser for my Grandson's elementary school. Thanks, Keigan!

Pink Poinsettia

One of the pink Poinsettias that were planted in the Butterfly House at the Calgary Zoo. They replaced a lot of the Tropical plants in there over Christmas.

Red Poinsettia

Seems awful to be posting photos of Poinsettias so long after Christmas! However, I didn't get a chance to photograph any of these brilliantly coloured plants until 28th December. These were growing in the Butterfly House in the Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo. At least I will have several images ready for next Christmas.

Poinsettia

I didn't manage to get to the Zoo before Christmas, but went this afternoon. I was dismally unsuccessful photographing a tiny Poinsettia that I bought for myself before Christmas, but had better luck today. The Butterfly House has been transformed into a Poinsettia House (while the butterflies are having a rest). Red, pink and white filled every space. Some were covered in condensation, which gave them a different look.
