Frilled Lizard

12 Sep 2009 225
I just needed something completely different for a change, and found this Frilled Lizard taken at the Calgary Zoo on 12th March. Feels strange to look at something that doesn't live in the forest here.

Moose

Unfortunately, seen at the Zoo a few days ago, not out in the wild. Ones that I do see in the wild are always far, far away. I managed to keep fences and sheds out of the background, so that it would look as natural as possible.

De Brazza's Monkey

11 Apr 2008 140
A spectacular resident of the Calgary Zoo, enjoying some time outdoors. "De Brazza's Monkey (Cercopithecus neglectus) is an Old World monkey that gets its name from French explorer Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza. Locally known as swamp monkeys, they are often found in wetlands in central Africa. It is very hard to find due to its good hiding abilities, and so there is not an accurate species count. This guenon has grey agouti fur with a reddish brown back, black limbs and tail and a white rump. A white stripe runs down its thigh, and an orange crescent-shaped marking appears on its forehead. Its white eyelids match its muzzle and beard. Both sexes have cheek pouches in which to carry food while they forage, and males have a blue scrotum. De Brazza's Monkey ranges across the swamps, bamboo and dry mountain forests of Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon, the Cherangani Hills of Kenya, Sudan, and Uganda. De Brazza's Monkey lives for about 22 years. It is a shy, territorial monkey that lives in small social groups." From Wikipedia.

Head tucked under the wing

15 Jun 2012 163
For a complete change from owls and other birds, here is a beautiful Flamingo from the Calgary Zoo, lol. "When not eating or preening, flamingos will sleep, facing the wind, head tucked under their wings, usually standing on one leg, with the other leg tucked up under their feathers. They do this to conserve warmth, whether they're in a warm or cool climate." Northern River Otter / Lutra canadensis

13 Mar 2011 226
This is the only photo I have of an Otter - and unfortunately it was taken at the Calgary Zoo : ) Taken through very dirty glass and snapped so quickly when the animal climbed out of the water for a couple of seconds. The original was so blown out, almost totally white. Amazes me what can be brought out of an image when so little can be seen. I am assuming that this captive animal is a Northern River Otter (Lutra canadensis). "Otters have never been abundant in Alberta. Moderate numbers still occur throughout the boreal, northern foothill and Rocky Mountain natural regions." www.srd.alberta.ca/BioDiversityStewardship/WildSpecies/Ma...

Black and white

22 Mar 2008 145
I love black and white in anything and have always been fascinated by the striped patterns of Zebras.

Droplets

30 Oct 2007 104
This Flamingo looks very "solid" with no feather details, which I don't really like. However, I do like the dripping water droplets.

Nivea Moisture Therapy, anyone?

27 Oct 2007 114
I couldn't get a decent shot of the animal because of the wide, metal fence, so decided I'd go just for the foot! No sign of Malti, the new baby Asian Elephant, but I suspect that they were keeping her inside, seeing as we had a fall of snow the previous night and it was rather chilly.

A little ruffled

28 Oct 2007 144
These birds usually look very sleek, so this one caught my attention with its ruffled neck feathers. I really should remember to call in and see them each time I go to the Zoo, to check out the lighting. I was quite lucky this day.

Teething problems

30 Apr 2007 136
Let me introduce you to baby Richard, a fairly new arrival at the Calgary Zoo. That's Mom in the background. Looks like he might be having a few teething problems, LOL!

Face to the sun

19 Mar 2007 132
This Timber Wolf at the Calgary Zoo just lifted its head and seemed to be in heaven, feeling the sun's warmth (at last) on its face. However, we are now back to dull and grey and cold.

Out on a limb

04 Dec 2006 124
I have never seen a live Porcupine in the wild (just roadkill) but came across this one at the Calgary Zoo the other day. I have seen some evidence of wild Porcupines - their burrows and stripped trees.

Ball of spines

04 Dec 2006 131
A pretty perfect ball of spines! There were three of these Porcupines out in the snow at the Calgary Zoo a few days ago.

Hanging beauty

23 Nov 2006 142
One of the butterflies at the newly renovated Butterfly House at the Calgary Zoo.

Mute Swan

23 Nov 2006 150
We don't get Mute Swans in the wild here but they do have them at the Calgary Zoo.

Blue Morpho

24 Nov 2006 123
Even though I feel it's cheating a little to photograph in a Butterfly House, I had to wait a long time before this huge, gorgeous blue butterfly landed.

Mute Swan

05 Oct 2006 106
Rather a graceful bird. We don't get them in the wild in Calgary, which meant a trip to the Zoo.

Owl Butterfly

01 Oct 2006 189
These Owl Butterflies are native to Central and South America. Their name is derived from the eyespots on their wings, which are used to scare away predators. This was photographed at the Calgary Zoo Butterfly House, which has recently been renovated and looks beautiful.
