Bee on Baby's breath

28 Apr 2013 236
This is a macro shot of Baby's breath flowers, which are quite tiny. Many of you will know this plant, as it is commonly used in flower arrangements. Once it is growing in the wild, it spreads and takes over the native plants. One area in Calgary where this has happened is the Erlton/Roxborough Natural Area, and this destruction probably started as a result of someone throwing away a flower arrangement from the cemetery that joins on to the Natural Area, tossing it over the fence.

We see this very small plant within the city, but I happened to take this macro photograph at Brown-Lowery Provincial Park, SW of Calgary, on 30 June 2012. Ths plant belongs to the Pink family, Caryophyllaceae.

Rather a strange photo of this very tiny wildflower - not sure why, but to me it looks almost as if it's a painting. Sorry again about all the wildflower photos I'm posting - it's just that time of the year. Our short growing season will soon be over. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silene_acaulis

Actually, the reason I took this photo was because I felt really bad when I pulled a thin blade of grass out of the way so that my camera didn't focus on it instead of the flower - and I accidentally picked the flower! It was so pretty, and I thought it would show up against the gorgeous blue sky we had that day. This is Chickweed, but not the Mouse-eared Chickweed. It seemed to be a different kind (with a somewhat sticky stem below the flower), but I can't remember the name. Doug, LOL??? Taken at Nose Hill.

We saw this plant at the Reader Rock Garden yesterday, but it does grow in the wild, too. It had hailed a short while before, and the water droplets were still on some of the flowers.

We found this garden escapee growing in the "wild" in North Glenmore Park the other week. Also known as Rose Campion. Not a very inspiring photo, but I did want one image of this flower included in my Plants of Alberta Set. I like the white ray pattern and the tiny "crown" in the centre. The colour is really pretty, too.
