Mountain Sheep

13 Oct 2009 253
Several cars pulled over and stopped to watch quite a large herd of Mountain Sheep yesterday afternoon, along the Elbow Falls Trail (Highway 66), Kananaskis. Some of the time, they were licking the salt off the road, and then they decided to climb an outcrop for a while. The youngest member of the family was very hesitant about trying to climb and so the rest of them patiently waited until s/he found an easier way to climb up. Then, back down they came and continued licking salt. People usually seem to be very good at slowing down or stopping for wildlife - always good to see. As you can see, I was in a winter wonderland (felt more like a nightmare for more than a brief moment, LOL)! Here in the city, we had snow all morning : (

Rutting season

Saw this handsome Mule Deer buck at Shannon Terrace in Fish Creek Park on 18th November last year. Not the most photogenic background, seeing some of the houses that edge the top of this park that stretches right across the width of the city. The park just carries on down into the valley. We are SO lucky to have such an amazing urban park - likewise with Weaselhead.

On fire

Our hike in the mountains yesterday, along the Jumpingound Loop trail, took us through forest and also into patches of more open hillside, as in this photo. The Fireweed had turned this beautiful colour and made such a spectacular sight! Perfect weather. What more could one want??

Another autumn leaf, photographed yesterday during a one-day Photography Course put on by the Friends of Fish Creek Provincial Park (FFCPP).

Fall is on its way

We saw the occasional brilliant red leaf on our walk at the Ranchlands natural area this morning. This one belongs to the Sticky Purple Geranium plant. After the whole month of July of temperatures around 29C and 31C, today was about 10C earlier this morning. It also rained. I returned home absolutely soaked to mid-thigh, with a whole bunch of photos that were blurry thanks greatly to the poor light on this gloomy day. Kind of refreshing, though, to feel almost cold!

Matching colours

I clicked the camera at the right time, unlike the next photo! Saw this little Chickadee blending in with the fall colours in the background yesterday evening, when I went back to the area where I had found the Long-eared Owl a few days ago. I'm always happy with a half-decent photo of a Chickadee, as they move so fast and are quite difficult to photograph - as proved by the next image.
