Rustaq fort, Oman
19 Mar 2010 |
|
Rustaq (or Rostaq) was once the capital of Oman. Rustaq fort, built four centuries prior to the dawn of Islam in Oman, is an imposing structure built on three levels, containing separate houses, an armoury, a mosque and four towers. My photo was taken in 1977 - in more recent times, the fort has been renovated. I'm glad I had the chance to see it in its original condition, but renovations were necessary to keep it standing.
Incense burner from Oman
06 Mar 2012 |
|
I've had this old, crude incense holder for around 35 years, took a photo of it about two years ago and am now finally posting it : ) I tried burning a piece of Frankincense several times, but discovered that my kitchen walls were covered in tiny flecks of black afterwards, which was not good! Better to be done outdoors.
This is an interesting article from the BBC, from 9 February 2010, about Oman's Frankincense and also about the research into Frankincense and a possible cure for cancer. Also a link to the short video on YouTube, connected to the article.
""The records show that frankincense was produced here as far back as 7,000 BC."

Looking towards Gulf of Oman
06 Mar 2010 |
|
A very old photo, taken from high up along the Shell camp, looking out over the Shell elementary school, over the narrow ridge of mountains to the Gulf of Oman. This is where we lived for six years, in pretty much the hottest place on earth, LOL!
Journey through the desert
09 Mar 2010 |
|
This is a typical view in the Interior of Oman, seen sometime between 1972 and 1978. An old tower, an old shelter, mountains and sandy desert. We only very rarely managed to take a trip into the Interior, but I loved it there. With the dreadful heat plus three very young children (the youngest born in that country), it was never an easy thing to do, to travel inland. I remember it like it was yesterday, though.
Need a coffee?
12 Mar 2010 |
|
This is s scan of an old photo I took in the 1970s (1972-1978), of the various items used to make coffee in Oman (Middle East). We had to get written permission to be allowed to take photos in the National Museum of Oman, Qurm, and this was very generously given. I am still in love with the copper coffee pots of various designs and the long-handled, large copper spoons used to roast the coffee beans : ) So much more character than simply turning on my kettle! Oman and its people have such a huge place in my heart : )
Muttrah Corniche
02 Feb 2007 |
|
This is one of the very fine, old buildings along the Corniche (sea road) in Muttrah, Muscat, Oman (Middle East). muscati, I hope I am right when I say I think this photo, taken in 1977, shows your grandfather's house.
Sunset over Seeb, Oman
28 Sep 2006 |
|
This was the view seen from our house in Ras al Hamra, Oman, back in the 1970s. I was looking out towards Seeb and the mountains from Ras al Hamra. A scan from an old print, so not the best quality.
