One of Santa's reindeer

09 Nov 2015 199
Two days ago, 7 November 2015, I was out all day with my daughter. She had asked if I wanted to go to several Christmas Fairs south of Calgary, including Millarville and Okotoks. Then, in the evening, I was out at the annual 'Banquet' for the nature group I belong to. So, the whole day was most enjoyable. I think half of Calgary as well as everyone from the surrounding areas were there at the same Christmas markets. Everywhere was absolutely packed! Normally, I don't go to any Christmas fairs any more, but it does make a lovely day out with my daughter. Each Christmas, I treat myself to one new thing, and this year was no exception : ) Also bought a Bison and roast vegetable pie from the Canadian Rocky Mountain Ranch exhibit, the first time I had ever tried anything from them. At one of the fairs, Santa's reindeer were patiently waiting in a pen outdoors. No sign of Rudolph, though : ) Our drive in between fairs took us through some beautiful scenery. I absolutey love our rolling hills with the Rocky Mountains in the distance. Love them at any time of the year, but I especially love to see them in fall and when covered in snow. How dfferent everywhere will be looking today, though - a winter wonderland! It has been snowing since last night and today, 9 November 2015, everywhere is under a blanket of snow. The temperature this morning is 0C (windchill -3C). We have been so lucky to have enjoyed an amazing fall season, so we really shouldn't complain.

Mushrooms at Millarville

13 Jun 2008 106
Today, I went with three friends to explore 20 (?) acres of beautiful land in Millarville, south of the city, to discover and record some of its birds, animals, insects, fungi and wildflowers. I always find this kind of thing exciting and interesting, and it was wonderful to be invited to see such an incredibly beautiful place. Thank you SO much, Marilyn, for this much-appreciated opportunity! This mushroom was one of the new things we saw. I just liked the way the light was shining through the gills - just glad you couldn't see me flat out on the soaking wet ground, trying to point the camera upwards, LOL!

The joy of Dandelions

14 Jun 2008 128
This was just one small view seen yesterday, when four of us explored (i.e bird and botanize) someone's private property in Millarville. Some areas were meadows of Dandelions, others had native plants in good supply, and some places had been taken over by non-native species, such as Brome Grass. A very beautiful and interesting 20 (?) acres! Thank you, Marilyn, for this privilege!

Some kind of Leaf beetle

Thanks, David, for finding a different Ladybug for me to photograph! We haven't seen one like this before. Hope it brought you good luck after being on your hand! Tall Lungwort

14 Jun 2008 159
Tall Lungwort, also called a Bluebell, has buds that are pink. I didn't notice the tiny insect wings until I saw my photo on my computer. Sometimes, the flowers of this wildflower are pale blue and other times quite a deep, rich blue. These ones were growing near Millarville, south of Calgary, on private property that four of us were lucky enough to bird and botanize yesterday

Caterpillars

We came across these two caterpillars four days ago, during a recent exploration of someone's property (20 acres?) near Millarville, south of Calgary. Haven't had a chance to start searching for an ID.
