Sunny downtown

Not the usual kind of photo I upload, but the sunlight was so beautiful yesterday afternoon during a walk near the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary. I zoomed in to catch the Calgary Tower and nearby office blocks.

Downtown from the Glenmore Reservoir

When I was on a walk in South Glenmore Park a couple of mornings ago, I zoomed in across Glenmore Reservoir all the way to downtown Calgary. So, even though these buildings look like they are just behind these trees, they are way off in the distance, approximately to the north east. The Calgary Tower used to be the tallest building in the city. Now, seen next to it, the building under construction is the crescent-shaped buidling called The Bow. It will be 236 m (774 ft) tall, with 58 stories (storeys). Total cost : 1.4 billion dollars! "The Bow is a 158,000-square-metre (1.7 million sq ft) office building currently under construction for the headquarters of EnCana Corporation. It will also be occupied by Cenovus, which was spun off of Encana in late 2009. The skyscraper will be built in downtown Calgary, Alberta. The building will be the tallest office tower in Canada outside Toronto, a title currently held by the Suncor Energy Centre's West tower, also in Calgary. The Bow is also considered the start of redevelopment in Downtown East Village. It is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2012." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Bow_ (skyscraper)

Calgary Tower

Took this photo of the Calgary Tower this morning, during a walk along the Elbow River. I always like seeing the bright splash of red. The Calgary Tower is a 190 metre free standing tower in downtown Calgary, Alberta, Canada. "Originally called The Husky Tower, it was officially renamed The Calgary Tower on November 1, 1971. In 1988, a natural gas-fired cauldron at the top was constructed. The flame in it burned throughout the 1988 Winter Olympics, and since then, has been lit for special events such as the Calgary Flames Stanley Cup victory in 1989 (as well as during their run for the cup during the 2004 finals), the visit of Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada to the city and other Alberta Centennial celebrations in 2005. The flame consumes 850 cubic meters of natural gas every hour. The Calgary tower features a revolving restaurant that rotates so as to give customers a scenic view of downtown Calgary. The base of the tower is connected through the +15 skyway network to One Palliser Square, Fairmont Palliser Hotel and EnCana Place." From Wikipedia.

The Calgary Tower used to be the tallest building in the city but office blocks have now overtaken it. This view was from the Erlton/Roxborough Natural Area.
