Dressed in all his finery

I spent a bit of time at the Calgary Zoo this afternoon, after getting no photos worth keeping the last two days of outings : ). This male Peacock and another one were putting up a bit of a fight on the path where I was standing, seemingly oblivious to the humans standing watching.

Too pretty to ignore

A friend pointed out this small feather lying in the snow on the ground yesterday morning - near the river at Beaverdam Flats. It belonged to a Mallard and I thought the purple irridescence was too pretty to waste. The white feather tip is totally blown out, unfortunately.

Mallard feather

I love the patches of irridescence on a Mallard's feather. Found this one on a recent walk at Pearce Estate.

Tree Swallow

Took this photo on 13th June 2005 whilst on an outing to see the Mountain Bluebird nesting boxes just south of the city. Some of these wooden boxes have been taken over by Tree Swallows, which are also banded and counted. Their irridescent feathers are so beautiful!

Irridescence

A poor photo, but I just wanted to show the irridescent feathers of the Magpie to those of you who don't have these birds. Even though the bird always looks black and white, when the sun catches the feathers, they are beautifully irridescent. And now I am going to go for a walk because it looks as if SNOW is somewhere up there, ready to fall!! I am NOT ready for it!

Reflected Mallard

"Just" a Mallard drake but I liked the reflection colours and swirls. I find that such reflections are far more vivid when I get home and upload and examine my photos than what they seemed to be in real life. Makes for a pleasant surprise each time.
