Peppermint frills

Thanks, Doris - there was some word about this flower that just escaped me. Peppermint is perfect : ) Just a single red and white Carnation in a bunch of pink/salmon ones that I bought from Safeway a week before Christmas. At the time, it felt like a Christmas flower.
A great pick-me-up

A much-needed pick-me-up today, as it has been very cold, gloomy and snowing all morning. I even chickened out of a three-hour walk this morning, which is unusual for me. Did call in at a local park a bit later in the hope of getting a few Chickadee shots, but I suspect they will all be too noisy (i.e. from low light, not from little chirping voices) and will end up being deleted. The Chickadees were noisier than ever and landed on my head and shoulder, hoping for a tiny snack on such a cold, nasty day.

One of the two huge Tulips that are growing in a pot - recently bought from Safeway (where else, LOL?). I seem to have acquired a taste for photographing beautiful Tulips! Too bad that the little red hearts on the inside of the petals don't show up.
A tulip centre for Flickr, LOL

So where was THIS when it was -30C and snowing, LOL? Funny, I still crave bright colours, despite the fact that our weather is warming up. Yes, I know there are already "too many" images of Tulip centres on Flickr - but, while some people hate them, I love them, ha! A beautiful day today, and I went on another walk at 12 Mile Coulee. Wanted to check out the Lichens and early spring wildflowers again. It's a good workout, too - which I definitely need : )
What happens in cold weather!

Took this photo on what must have been the coldest day of winter 2007/2008. This poor little female House Sparrow was so puffed up that she was barely recognizable as a member of that species : )
Magic for a child

This Paper Kite butterfly landed on a little girl's arm in the Butterfly House that was (is now demolished and being rebuilt) at the Calgary Zoo. A special treat for anyone, but especially a child.

This is what everything looked like on Saturday morning, down near the Bow River. It was one of the most beautiful mornings I have ever seen! Every plant, bush, blade of grass, metal railing and fence, etc. was decorated so delicately with gorgeous ice crystals. By the time we turned around to retrace our steps, it had all melted : ( I would love to be able to watch these crystals grow under a microscope. Hey, Machel - if you look really closely and use a HUGE amount of imagination, you can see the faintest suggestion of dotted bokeh : )
Heart in the deep of things

I could have used this Tulip for Valentine's Day, but it wasn't till late last night that the two flowers in this pot started to open. That is when I saw the pretty heart design : ) There are three perfect little hearts alternating with three smudged hearts.

So, who knows what this is? I wasn't sure whether to post this image or not, but decided that it was worth posting just for the splash of vivid blue - I love this shade.

Yes, a Tropical bird seen at the Calgary Zoo - actually, I've just looked at my photo again and it suddenly went through my mind that it looks almost as if it has a Red Powder Puff flower on top of its head. These really are strange looking birds, but their colours are brilliant.
