This photo was taken yesterday, 8 September 2016, when our birding walk was at the east end of Fish Creek Park, in the Sikome area and also a little way along the river, south of Highway 22X. My main reason for going was that I was really hoping either to see one of the Black-crowned Night-herons that have been seen on several days, or that at least I could find out exactly where they had been seen. We saw three of them, all juveniles, but they were in the trees and extremely difficult to see and photograph. My next photo is being posted just for the record.

When I visited the Calgary Zoo on 28 September 2014, there were several of these young Meerkats playing in their small enclosure, They were constantly on the move, though these three did stop very briefly on top of a tree stump.
"The meerkat or suricate, Suricata suricatta, is a small mammal belonging to the mongoose family. Meerkats live in all parts of the Kalahari Desert in Botswana, in much of the Namib Desert in Namibia and southwestern Angola, and in South Africa. A group of meerkats is called a "mob", "gang" or "clan". A meerkat clan often contains about 20 meerkats, but some super-families have 50 or more members. Meerkats have an average life span of 12–14 years."

Remember to celebrate EARTH HOUR this evening between 8:30 pm and 9:30 pm.
"Earth Hour is a worldwide grassroots movement uniting people to protect the planet, and is organised by WWF. Engaging a massive mainstream community on a broad range of environmental issues, Earth Hour was famously started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia in 2007. Since then it has grown to engage more than 7000 cities and towns worldwide, and the one-hour event continues to remain the key driver of the now larger movement.
The event is held worldwide towards the end of March annually, encouraging individuals, communities households and businesses to turn off their non-essential lights for one hour as a symbol for their commitment to the planet."

Like mini Easter Hot Cross Buns

These mushrooms start off (as seen in my last fungi photo that I posted) with very pale caps and then darken and create these wonderful patterns. They remind me of Hot Cross Buns that you can buy around Easter time : ) There were lots of this kind of mushroom on the edge of Fish Creek park at the eastern end recently, but they quite quickly dried and shrivelled up, forming most unphotogenic (if there is such a word), shapeless piles on top of the mulch.
Any chance this might be Cracked-Cap Mushroom / Agrocybe dura?
Happily fed, sleeping piglets

My youngest daughter and I love to go and see Momma pig and her piglets at the Stampede Grounds during Stampede. There were 11 of these beautiful little pink piggies and they had just been fed/ They love to climb over each other and snuggle into a huge heap of hairy bodies : )
Posting ridiculously early this morning, as I have a long, long day of botanizing east of the city, at Horseshoe Canyon today. This amazing canyon is near Drumheller, in the Badlands of Alberta (dinosaur country). Something like a two-hour drive to get out there.
