A place of peace and beauty

10 Jan 2015 322
I needed something peaceful and beautiful to look at this morning, and I found it in this photo taken on 7 December 2014. After looking through all the old photo albums to find some favourite photos of my oldest daughter, Fiona, for a slide show for her celebration of life service in a few days' time, I am taking a short break and posting a couple of photos on my photostream. My son has almost finished creating the slideshow and, last night, he sent me the draft of it. It's beautifully done, needless to say. This winter scene was taken on a day trip to the mountains with friends, Cathy and Terry. We drove the area of Highway 40 that is still open (the rest of this highway is closed during the winter months) and also the Smith-Dorrien road. It was a day of mixed cloud and bright sunshine, resulting in rather spectacular light at times. The scenery was incredibly beautiful, especially the areas of Kananaskis where the snow was still clinging to the coniferous trees. As well as mountain scenery, we were also lucky enough to find two Moose to watch and photograph. I always feel so privileged when I witness any kind of wildlife, especially so when you get the chance to watch a while and learn the behaviour of the animal or bird you are lucky enough to see. My friends were so delighted to be able to let me experience this yesterday, though I always tell them that just being in such spectacular scenery and being able to photograph the mountains is more than enough for me. This day, they did really, really well!

Clouds over Frank Lake

I love our wonderful Alberta skies! They seem to go on and on forever, especially when seen over the flat prairies and in an area like Frank Lake. This photo was taken yesterday afternoon, SE of Calgary, at Frank Lake, on 16 August 2014. I ended up being out all day, spending three hours in the morning birding with a group of friends at Carburn Park in the city. It's the time of year when lots of the various tiny Warblers are passing through the city again. Then, Flickr/birder/photography friend, Pam, asked if I wanted to go SE of the city to the Frank Lake area. We had a fun afternoon, with a few reasonable bird sightings. As you can see, though, there were no close birds seen in this view from the blind, ha. The clouds were amazing, though somehow I didn't manage to get any good photos of them. Seeing them reflected in the lake was perhaps the best place. Thanks, Pam, for suggesting a drive to one of my favourite areas! Hope your photos came out better than mine, lol!!

Clouds over Frank Lake

I love it when the whole sky fills with an endless mass of these clouds. Our Alberta skies are best seen out on the prairie, where they and the land seem to go on forever. This was taken SW of Calgary, in the Frank Lake area, on 27 April 2014. This was a day that was spent with a group of friends, driving around the lake, checking to see what bird species we could find. It started off extremely foggy with a touch of hoarfrost. Perhaps not the ideal weather for seeing birds, but the fog did eventually clear and the sun came out. It turned out to be a beautiful day and most enjoyable, with a good number of bird species found - a total of 53 species. All the birds were extremely distant, apart from a couple of owl nests and a pair of Tree Swallows, so my photos are more or less limited to landscape, hoarfrost and cloud formations, all of which I enjoy.

This was taken SW of Calgary, in the Frank Lake area, on 27 April 2014. Overslept this morning, thanks to having to take a muscle relaxant tablet last night. Actually, I only took half a tablet, just to see what it would do, so I can't say I look forward to having to take a whole one for the next 30 days. These are part of the treatment for the inflammation of my rotator cuffs, especially in the right shoulder, along with an anti-inflammatory ointment, heat, etc.. Finally had my appointment with my doctor yesterday, and she said she doesn't think there are tears in the rotator cuffs. Have to set up physiotherapy (which normally I avoid, as it's expensive and I don't like having to go, ha). However, when something interferes with my photography - not to mention everything else I need to do - then I have no choice but to go : )

A sky bursting with clouds

Round and round they go

Spent a few hours down at the Stampede grounds with my youngest daughter yesterday. Ha, I did about 8,000 steps on the hike on the Small Whalebackand on Sunday and then yesterday I did around 10,000 steps walking the Stampede Grounds. Couldn't believe my pedometer when I got home this afternoon after spending about four hours breathing in the smell from the food vendors, getting neck cramps from watching people get flung on a bungee-type ride or the high swings, watching Mom pig feed her 11 little piglets, seeing the most beautiful horses from Clydesdales to Miniatures. It is quite an experience to "do" the Grounds - thanks, Rachel, for a fun time! Ha, hope your photos turned out better than mine!

Our Alberta skies

This was taken on 17th October, when I dashed out along a few muddy, gravelly side roads just outside the city, because the sun had finally just come out briefly. I love seeing a field of hay bales at this golden time of year, along with a sky full of interesting clouds. I LOVE Alberta (except for the bitter cold and snow/ice)!!!
