Rustaq fort, Oman

19 Mar 2010 206
Rustaq (or Rostaq) was once the capital of Oman. Rustaq fort, built four centuries prior to the dawn of Islam in Oman, is an imposing structure built on three levels, containing separate houses, an armoury, a mosque and four towers. My photo was taken in 1977 - in more recent times, the fort has been renovated. I'm glad I had the chance to see it in its original condition, but renovations were necessary to keep it standing.

Patterns, Mammoth Hot Springs

01 Nov 2012 285
So many beautiful patterns and textures are created around the various springs at Mammoth Hot Springs and other hot spring/geyser locations within Yellowstone National Park. This shot was taken from the boardwalk, looking over the railing, near the Main Terrace at Mammoth Hot Springs, on 12 September 2012. "Mammoth Hot Springs is a large complex of hot springs on a hill of travertine in Yellowstone National Park ... It was created over thousands of years as hot water from the spring cooled and deposited calcium carbonate (over two tons flow into Mammoth each day in a solution). Although these springs lie outside the caldera boundary, their energy has been attributed to the same magmatic system that fuels other Yellowstone geothermal areas... A caldera is a cauldron-like volcanic feature usually formed by the collapse of land following a volcanic eruption. They are sometimes confused with volcanic craters." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mammoth_Hot_Springs For a diagram of the Hot Springs layout: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:MammothHotSprings.JPG Map of Yellowstone National Park: hfc.nps.gov/carto/PDF/YELLmap2.pdf

Great Pyramid, Giza

A scan of another print from a colour slide, taken way back in 1967, when we were able to spend just a few days in Egypt on our way from Doha, Qatar, back to England before going to live in Holland for a few months.

Journey through the desert

This is a typical view in the Interior of Oman, seen sometime between 1972 and 1978. An old tower, an old shelter, mountains and sandy desert. We only very rarely managed to take a trip into the Interior, but I loved it there. With the dreadful heat plus three very young children (the youngest born in that country), it was never an easy thing to do, to travel inland. I remember it like it was yesterday, though.

India

Yes, a very out-of-place photo to be seen on my photostream, LOL, tucked in between the flowers and the birds. I was browsing a few photos on my hard drive, deleting quite a few that I had once thought looked OK, and happened to come across this very, very old one that I had scanned ages ago. Decided to add it to my Middle and Far East Set. I know I have the definite location somewhere, but don't want to spend the time searching now - I should be getting on with the rest of my overseas Christmas letters! However, I believe I took this at The Fort (?) in Agra, India, back in 1967. We spent four days in that country en route from a short leave in England out to Borneo, where we were going to live..
