Crownvetch

I was SO happy to see some Crownvetch today on a walk that included the Tom Campbell Hill and a pathway that runs alongside the Calgary Zoo. A friend had found Crownvetch recently and posted a beautiful photo of it - and I knew, then, that I really wanted to see this attractive flower. I suspect that I would have walked straight past it if I had been on my own, as it reminds me of a very open Clover flower. Both belong to the Pea Family, Fabaceae.

Crownvetch is not a true vetch, although it resembles common and hairy vetch. Crownvetch spreads from rhizomes and will form a dense cover. It has been used for soil stabilization and as an ornamental for many years. Coronilla means "little crown", and varia refers to variations in flower color as well as growth habits.

I'm not going to even attempt to identify this kind of Vetch or Milkvetch - there are just too many of them to choose from. I liked the pattern of the little green leaves in the top right corner.
