Water Lilies, Nariva Swamp afternoon, Trinidad

In the afternoon of Day 6 of our trip to Trinidad & Tobago, 18 March 2017, my friends and I visited the Nariva Swamp on the east coast of Trinidad, which is mainly agricultural habitats with some wetlands. We had some good birding there. We also saw a few interesting plants, especially the Sacred Lotus. This is one of my favourite things to photograph in the Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo. Another nice find were these Water Lilies, still in bud. Love the texture of their leaves, too.
"The Nariva Swamp is the largest freshwater wetland in Trinidad and Tobago and has been designated a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. The swamp is located on the east coast of Trinidad, immediately inland from the Manzanilla Bay through Biche and covers over 60 square kilometres (23 mi). The Nariva Swamp is extremely biodiverse. It is home to 45 mammal species, 39 reptile species, 33 fish species, 204 bird species, 19 frog species, 213 insect species and 15 mollusc species. All this contained in just 60 square kilometers.
The area provides important habitat for waterfowl and is key habitat for the West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus), caimans, anacondas, boa constrictors, red howler monkeys, white-fronted capuchin monkeys, numerous species of parrots, including both the blue-and-gold macaw and red-bellied macaws, as well as many wetland and savanna birds.
Four major wetland vegetation types occur in the Nariva Swamp - mangrove swamp forest, palm forest, swamp wood, and freshwater marsh." From Wikipedia.

This is a video that I found on YouTube, taken by Rigdon Currie and Trish Johnson, at many of the same places we visited on Trinidad and Tobago. Not my video, but it made me feel like I was right there still. Posting the link here again, so that I won't lose it.

I also came across the following 27-minute YouTube video of the flora and fauna of Trinidad, filmed by John Patrick Smith in February 2015.

And so I needed a warm, colourful shot to post today. I haven't dared look at the weather forecast yet this morning, but it is supposed to get a bit warmer by this afternoon. Tomorrow, things are supposed to improve a lot, thank goodness! The only time I've been out the last three days was a neccessary trip to get groceries yesterday afternoon. Stay warm, everyone! Took this photo of a beautiful Water Lily growing in the ENMAX Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo on October 11th. I love the yellow flower centre - it's so perfect.
Last night, I noticed this link to the newspaper article about our weather yesterday on my son's Facebook page.

I liked the colours and shapes of these thin, flat Lily pads on a small pond at an acreage near Millarville (south of the city). My other photos include a gorgeous flower, but I still liked this one of just the leaves.

On 16 April 2013, this was the only Water Lily in bloom at the Calgary Zoo. Moments earlier, it had been standing tall and upright. Then the sprinkler was turned on and the weight of the water bowed down this beautiful bloom, giving a different angle on the centre. I love Water Lilies and I thought this one, despite fewer petals on its left side, looked pretty against the mottled lily pads. Haven't had time, or else the weather has been gloomy and overcast, to get back to the Zoo. Also have been getting enough wildlife to keep me occupied and happy : )

I haven't been taking a whole lot of photos the last little while and needed a few hours in which I could shoot to my heart's content : ) Taken at the Calgary Zoo yesterday, July 24th. Love to see Water Lilies - and this one even had a caterpillar crawling over it when I first got there.

This bright little flower had been dropped into one of the lily ponds in the ENMAX Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo, either by a child or - as another photographer standing nearby said - by another photographer who wanted to create a photo. Funny, it would never have occurred to me to do that. Apart from getting a "fake" photo (in my eyes, anyway), I would have felt so guilty picking a flower!
Needed a bright photo today, as it is -30C (-22F) at the moment (heading towards noon)! It's supposed to rise one whole degree to -29C this afternoon (windchill -42C). Expected to be -35C (-31F) tomorrow morning, soaring to a balmy -24C in the afternoon. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday all below -20C, soaring to a high of 0C for Saturday and then back down to -15C on Sunday. Next week should all be above 0C ... sigh. I really need a trip to Safeway, unfortunately, and I had planned to go for back X-Rays this afternoon. I didn't plug in my car yesterday, as I was planning to go back out again, so I know I should at least step outside and do that, IF I can get the front door and screen door open. Had a problem with it yesterday morning - the rubber strip along the edge of the screen door had frozen to the door step, ha! Oh, the joys of winter!

This gorgeous flower makes me think of satin. Taken at the Calgary Zoo on 10th September 2011.

Love to see this beautiful, deep pink Water Lily in a tiny pond at the Calgary Zoo. It's quite different from the narrow-petalled blue-purple ones in the butterfly room.

How I love Water Lilies! This beauty was growing in the tiny pond at the Calgary Zoo, in the ENMAX Conservatory, on September 10th.
I was out on a 3+ hour walk in Fish Creek Park this morning, from Votier's Flats to Bebo Grove and back. The highlight of the walk has to be a family of Least Weasels - about eight babies! For most of the time, these little creatures moved in one solid mass through the tangle of grasses and plants. They were absolutely adorable. I don't think I've ever seen a Least Weasel (or maybe I did, once) - much smaller than the Long-tailed Weasel. Couldn't get a sharp focus on them because my camera wanted to focus on the grasses, but I'll see if I can rescue a shot when I've downloaded them to my computer.

Can never resist taking a few shots of the Water Lilies growing in a tiny, indoor pond at the Calgary Zoo. Such amazing flowers. Oh, boy, what a contrast this vibrant flower is to what it looks like outside this morning! We had another snowfall last night and it is one big, slushy mess out there today. I guess I'll find out just how bad it is in a short while, as I'm meeting several friends for lunch today, which will be so enjoyable.

I just liked the shape and patterns of these water droplets on the lily pads in the tiny pond in the Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo. Taken on April 4th.
Where DOES all this snow come from??? Yet another day of heavy snow. It's only -4C (24F), thankfully, but, even so ...... That's about seven months of snow : )

A beautiful Water Lily that was growing at the Calgary Zoo. Photographed on 8th July.
I was out walking at Mallard Point, east end of Fish Creek Park, for about three hours this morning, watching and listening for birds. We enjoyed watching at least three Osprey flying along the Bow River and were lucky to see one of them dive and catch a large fish. One of them perched very high up in a tall tree and I was able to get some shots from close to the tree on the return walk. There was even a small patch of blue sky for a few brief moments while I was doing this and then the sky went back to its usual overcast colour. I announced to my friends that I was going to take the other path back to the parking lot because I wanted to check for fungi on any fallen logs - did find two or three, including one sweet one. From there, I went straight to an area that I had walked in a few days ago, covered in wood chips. I had found a few mushrooms there, but this time I found what I was hoping for - Bird's-nest Fungi. We are usually so thrilled when, on the rare occasion, we do find a cluster of three or four tiny "nests", but this afternoon I saw hundreds, LOL!!! Such a dull day that I don't know yet if any of my photos have turned out. Guess I will download them shortly, keeping my fingers tightly crossed.
