When I was on a three-hour walk with friends the other morning, at Griffith Woods, someone happened to notice this tiny, old Hummingbird nest hanging from a very low Spruce branch. So beautifully made. A friend was holding a $10 bill for someone else to take a photo and, though I usually never add something for size in any of my photos, I thought it might work for this one. More info on these nests when I get back from a very cold, snowy, three-hour walk in Fish Creek Park. Later: rodinal1 pointed out something that I thought of late last night - that the thumb gives a more accurate idea of the size of this tiny nest. Forgot to say that this morning, when I posted the image. Thanks! Later: my three-hour walk turned into just over an hour and a half, ha! What a miserable, cold, slushy, slippery morning it is. The roads were dreadful! I need new tires and rather wish I had bought some before this bad weather moved in. Still snowing steadily this afternoon. Almost all the birds were either in hiding or up at garden feeders around the edges of Fish Creek Park. Photographing nests and nesting birds is frowned upon by many people/birders, so hopefully this video was taken with a very powerful zoom lens. Hummingbirds sometimes return to use the same nest. They build their tiny nests from spider webs, soft cottony material, moss and plant fibres, and hang beautiful lichens from the spider webs. The typical hummingbird nest is tiny, about the size of half an English walnut shell! We were privileged this afternoon to come across this Northern Harrier's nest and eggs. It was built on a grassy hillside in a natural area south of the city. I have an 18x zoom, so was able to get a couple of very quick shots without going any nearer to the nest. Hopefully, all three eggs will hatch successfully and three more beautiful raptors will be able to grace our skies! The temperature was somewhere around a warm 22C, so there was no fear of the eggs not keeping warm while Mom was cruising the skyways nearby: )
