Happy Fence Friday, All.
This is Nuffield College in Oxford.
The College was founded by Lord Nuffield (born William Richard Morris in 1877). He was a British motor manufacturer, the founder of Morris Motors Limited, who has been described as one of Britain's greatest philanthropists. He took his title, Lord Nuffield, from the village of Nuffield, Oxfordshire where he lived.
Apparently, the tower was originally planned to be ornamental but was then redesigned to hold the college's library. It was the first tower built in Oxford for 200 years and is about 150 feet (46 m) tall, including the flèche on top.

Happy Fence Friday, All
There is a fence here, honest :-)
This is Nuffield College, Oxford.
The College was founded in 1937. Lord Nuffield, the industrialist and founder of Morris Motors donated land for the college. He also gave £900,000.00. Lord Nuffield appointed the college's first fellows in 1939 but due to the outbreak of World War II construction did not start until 1949.

HAPPY FENCE FRIDAY, ALL :-)
I normally hibernate when it is cold and snowy :-) But, last Monday I braved the elements and went to Oxford. Thankfully, most of the snow had disappeared!
This shot is of Nuffield College and I believe this is the library tower topped by a flèche. A flèche is, apparently, a lead-covered timber spire, or spirelet :-)
Nuffield College was founded in 1937 after a donation to the University by William Richard Morris an English motor manufacturer who founded Morris Motors Limited.
I was looking for a motor car link for 'Sight and Sound' and here comes a very wayward one :-)
There is a group called 'The Cars'. I am using their song "Just What I Needed" covered here by Postmodern Jukebox featuring Sara Niemietz :-)

"Boulder to Birmingham" was written by Emmylou Harris and Bill Danoff and features on Emmy's 1975 album "Pieces of the Sky". Bill Danoff was married to Taffy Nivert and together with John Denver they wrote "Take Me Home Country Roads". Bill Danoff & Taffy NIvert were also members of the Starland Vocal Band and they recorded "Boulder to Birmingham" as well.
I hope you are following me thus far :-)
My photo was taken in the grounds of Nuffield College in Oxford. "Boulder to Birmingham" is one of my all-time favourite tracks by Emmylou and as there is a 'Boulder' in my photo I think this should be my 'Sight and Sound' link :-)
I also found, on YouTube, a 1977 live performance of "Boulder to Birmingham" by the Starland Vocal Band so a link to this is included :-)
I'll stop now :-)

From the College website -
"Nuffield College, which was founded in 1937, is located in the centre of Oxford. The College buildings were designed by Austen Harrison. His plans were approved in 1940 but the College was not built until the mid-1950s. The College was originally funded by William Morris (Lord Nuffield) a local businessman who founded Morris Motors Ltd. In the late 1950s additional resources to complete the buildings were provided by the Nuffield Foundation, a separate charity also set-up by Lord Nuffield."
There are 30+ University Colleges in Oxford and it always surprises and pleases me that you can pretty much just walk into a good proportion of them! Sometimes you have to pay a couple of quid............pounds sterling that is :-) and sometimes entry is free :-))) There is not any charge to walk around Nuffield College....amazing :-)))
