Happy Fence Friday, All.
Autumn in Croome, Worcestershire.
This time a view of the house, Croome Court.
Just a little bit bigger than my house methinks :-)))
From the National Trust -
"The 6th Earl set about transforming the original red brick, 17th-century house of his ancestors, but he didn’t knock it down, perhaps for reasons of economy or sentiment. Instead, he used it as a template, altering and refacing it in the Palladian style, using the old foundations and keeping some of the walls that form the central spine of the house. That is why, unlike many other Palladian mansions, the House at Croome does not occupy a commanding position up on high ground, such as where the church now stands. New turreted wings were added at each end and a magnificent Palladian portico was built on the southern side. Traces of the original building can still be seen inside and the chimneystacks from the older building are visible above the roof."

The darker bit of the photo at the top is part of the Malvern Hills.
From the National Trust -
"A family home (this is out of my shot to the left), RAF Defford airbase, Catholic boys’ school and UK headquarters for Hare Krishna, the history of Croome is a rich and varied one."
"Unbeknown to many at the time, the Croome estate housed RAF Defford during the Second World War that became the main station in Britain for the development of airborne radar during and after the Second World War. The experiments and developments carried out at Defford were of great historic significance, for they played a vital part in helping the Allies to win the war and paved the way for many electronic applications that we now take for granted."

From the National Trust website -
"During the Second World War and the Cold War years that followed, RAF Defford the secret airfield built in the grounds of Croome park, was one of the most secret places in the country. For it was at Defford that Airborne Radar was tested, developed and proven".
Also, for 'Sight and Sound' a song about a treehouse seems logical but there don't appear to be many such songs on YouTube. The only one I could find is "Sittin' in a Treehouse" by Marty Robbins :-)
