Happy Fence Friday, All This is the road that leads from the Waddesdon Manor Welcome Centre to the House. It is mostly used by the courtesy bus. Adjacent to this is the pathway that also goes from the Welcome Centre to the House. For 'Sight and Sound' I have chosen a "Gate" song. Pretty sure this is not 'St. Olaf's Gate' but it seems a good enough reason to use one of my favourite performances by Nanci Griffith :-) The song was written by Tom Russell. Happy Fence Friday, All A 15 minute walk from our house is Stoke Mandeville Hospital and nearby the hospital is a small Asda Supermarket. If we are running low on any items, it is quite convenient to walk to Asda. On 24 September I set out for Asda and the sun was shining. By the time I got near to Asda the sky was darkening! I thought I was going to get soaked but after a few spots of rain the sun started to try and break through. I had my phone with me and thought this structure, that is actually in the grounds of the hospital just across the road from Asda, could be an HFF subject :-) I also thought there ought to be a 'Sight and Sound' link :-) The sky was stormy and in 1989 Nanci Griffith recorded an album entitled "Storms". My pretty tenuous link is "You Made This Love a Teardrop" from the album. Explored! Thank you very much :-) This is the Octagon Lake with Stowe House in the background. The Lake kinda divides parts of the garden and I figure a tenuous link for 'Sight and Sound' would be "Across the Great Divide" by Nanci Griffith and Emmylou Harris :-) This song was written Kate Wolf. Way back in 2009 Helen took me to Paris for a surprise birthday treat. We stayed at 'Hotel Balmoral' just 'round corner from the Arc de Triomphe. It certainly felt like a Grande Hotel and this seems a good opportunity to link my photo to "Late Night Grande Hotel" by Nanci Griffith from her 1991 album of the same name. One of my fave tracks from Nanci although, of course, everything Nanci recorded is my fave :-) Added to ~ Sight and Sound : Pictures & Music ♫ ♪ ♪ ♫ Listen here ~ Late Night Grande Hotel ~ Nanci Griffith</a

The lady from BBC Three Counties Radio was about to be transported up Kop Hill in one of the Ecurie Ecosse racing cars.....a D-Type Jaguar (thank you for identifying the car, Larry) driven by Dick Skipworth....pretty quickly as I remember!! I'm sure that behind the smile she was thinking "Hell No (I'm Not Alright)" :-))) This naturally leads to "Hell No (I'm Not Alright)" by Nanci Griffith :-) I think I may be falling in love with the lady singing harmony and playing the red and white guitar :-) Trouble is I have now discovered that her name is Maura Kennedy and Maura is married to Pete, the guy next to her :-( Added to ~ Sight and Sound ♫ ♪ ♪ ♫ Listen here ~ Hell No (I'm Not Alright) ~ Nanci Griffith

Here comes a pretty obscure link..................... I seem to remember that back in 2009 we drove through Monmouth and then some hours/days later we stopped here so I could take this photo :-) For the purposes of 'Sight and Sound' we need to imagine this is Tecumseh Valley. If we do this I can then link my photo to "Tecumseh Valley" written by Townes Van Zandt :-) In my opinion one of his finest songs. Two links follow. One by Nanci Griffith & James Hooker and the original by Townes Van Zandt. From Wikipedia - “Sark consists of two main parts, Greater Sark and Little Sark to the south. They are connected by a narrow isthmus called La Coupée which is 300 feet (91m) long and has a drop of 330 feet (100m) on each side. Protective railings were erected in 1900; before then, children would crawl across on their hands and knees to avoid being blown over the edge.” I figure this is like crossing the Great Divide hence a tenuous link to “Across the Great Divide” written by Kate Wolf and performed here by Nanci Griffith. Added to Soundtrack Weekend www.ipernity.com/group/362993 To me the most obvious choice of a song here would have been “These Boots are Made for Walking” by Nancy Sinatra. But, the YouTube clips I found were, quite honestly, out of bounds ‘cos of some of the most distasteful comments I have seen in a mighty long time!!! So, next on the list is “Boots of Spanish Leather“. I don’t know if the young ladies boots were from Spain but they will have to be for the purposes of Soundtrack Weekend :-))) “Boots of Spanish Leather” written by Bob Dylan is performed here by Nanci Griffith. Here I go again :-)) but, Nanci is one of my fave singers :-)) From Wikipedia - “Nanci Caroline Griffith (born July 6, 1953) is an American singer, guitarist, and songwriter. Born in Seguin, Texas, Nanci’s career has spanned a variety of musical genres, predominantly country, folk, and what she terms "folkabilly." Nanci won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album in 1994 for her recording, Other Voices, Other Rooms. This album features Nanci covering the songs of artists who are her major influences. One of her better-known songs is "From a Distance," which was written and composed by Julie Gold, although Bette Midler's version achieved greater commercial success. Similarly, other artists have occasionally achieved greater success with Nanci’s songs than Nanci herself. For example, Kathy Mattea had a country music top five hit with a 1986 cover of Nanci’s "Love at the Five and Dime" and Suzy Bogguss had one of her largest hits with Griffith's and Tom Russell's "Outbound Plane". In 1994, Nanci teamed up with Jimmy Webb to contribute the song "If These Old Walls Could Speak" to the AIDS benefit album Red Hot + Country produced by the Red Hot Organization. Nanci is a survivor of breast cancer which was diagnosed in 1996, and thyroid cancer in 1998.” Watch/Listen here- www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXMW2otJXMQ
