Pitstone Windmill stands in a large field near the parish boundary of Ivinghoe and Pitstone in Buckinghamshire. It is now owned by the National Trust. It is thought to have been first built circa 1627 as this date is carved on part of the framework of the windmill. This is the earliest date to be found on any windmill in the British Isles. Such a structure would have had to have frequent repairs made to it, so it is quite possible the mill predates 1627. The lead vocal here is by Richard Manuel. Richard was born in Stratford, Ontario, Canada. Tragically, Richard committed suicide when he was only 42 years of age. Below is an extract reproduced from Wikipedia. He had appeared to be in relatively good spirits but ominously thanked Garth Hudson for "twenty-five years of incredible music". The Band returned to the Quality Inn, down the block from the Cheek to Cheek Lounge, and Richard talked with Levon Helm about music and film in Levon's room. According to Levon, at around 2:30 Richard said he needed to get something from his room. Upon returning to his motel room, it is believed that he finished one last bottle of Grand Marnier before hanging himself. Richard's wife Arlie - also intoxicated at the time - discovered his body along with the depleted bottle and a small amount of cocaine the following morning. Mick's super shot of 'Cookie' www.ipernity.com/doc/631051/34011387 reminded me of the effectiveness of colour popping and Mick rightly said there are peeps out there who do absolutely mind-blowing selectives! I don't think I have sufficient patience to do the complicated ones so I figured out that the wheel in this shot ought to be fairly straightforward to tackle :-) Umm........ok........up to a point, but the wheel being partly obscured did try my patience a little :-) Think that next time I will choose a shot where the whole wheel is visible :-)

From the National Trust website - “Pitstone Windmill is one of the oldest windmills in Britain. The Mill ground flour for the village for almost three hundred years until a freak storm in the early 1900s left it damaged beyond economic repair. Donated to the National Trust in 1937 Pitstone Windmill has been faithfully restored by a dedicated team of local volunteers. Today you can explore both the inner and outer workings of the windmill; including the massive post upon which the mill turns and the tail pole which the miller used to position the sails in the wind, while also taking in spectacular views of the surrounding Chilterns countryside."

It should be remembered that such a structure would have had to have frequent repairs made to it, so it is quite possible the mill predates 1627. For many hundreds of years grain grown in the two adjoining villages was ground at the mill into flour. In 1874 the mill was bought by Adelbert Wellington Brownlow Cust, 3rd Earl Brownlow who owned the nearby Ashridge Estate. He subsequently let it to a local farmer, who ran a successful milling business from the mill. In 1902 the mill was seriously damaged during an enormous gale, damaging it beyond the price of economic repair. Around 1922 the derelict ruined mill was bought from the Ashridge Estate by a farmer whose land was close to the mill. In 1937 he donated it to the National Trust. However, it was not until 1963 that a band of volunteers began to carry out renovations at their own expense. The mill appeared in an episode of The Champions titled The Invisible Man which was filmed in 1967. In 1970, after an interlude of 68 years, the mill once again ground corn.” p.s. in case anyone wants to know the aeroplane was most likely on its way to..........or just leaving Luton Airport :-))
