Happy Fence Friday, All Part of Merton College, Oxford. From Wikipedia - "Merton College's foundation can be traced back to the 1260s when Walter de Merton, chancellor to Henry III and later to Edward I, first drew up statutes for an independent academic community and established endowments to support it. An important feature of de Merton's foundation was that this "college" was to be self-governing and the endowments were directly vested in the Warden and Fellows."

Happy Fence Friday, All. One from the Archives where I decided it needed a panoramic crop :-) On the left is Merton College, Oxford. Merton College was founded in 1264 by Walter de Merton, Lord Chancellor and Bishop of Rochester. It is claimed to be the oldest college in Oxford. But, apparently, this has been disputed by Balliol College and University College. I don't know if there has been any agreement to which college is actually the oldest! In the distance is Magdalen Tower. The Tower is one of the oldest parts of Magdalen College. Built of stone from 1492, when the foundation stone was laid, its bells were hung ready for use in 1505 and completed by 1509. It is 144 feet (44 m) high and dominates the eastern entrance to the city of Oxford. When looking for a 'Sight & Sound' link I didn't think I would find a song called "College". But, surprisingly, I found "College" by Pat Green. I was going to say I hadn't heard of Pat Green but, actually, I think I do have one of Pat's albums tucked away...somewhere :-) Added to Sight and Sound : Pictures & Music ♫ ♪ ♫ ♪ Listen here ~ College - Pat Green Maybe view my photo Large, please :-)

I think this would be the 'Front Quadrangle' From the College website - "Merton College, the first fully self-governing College in the University, was founded in 1264 by Walter de Merton, sometime Chancellor of England and later Bishop of Rochester. Mob Quadrangle, the oldest quadrangle in the University, was built in three phases: the Treasury c.1288-91, the north and east ranges and the Sacristy c.1304-11, and the Library on the south and west sides 1373-8. Mob Library is the oldest continuously functioning library for university academics and students in the world. The Gatehouse dates from the early fifteenth century, when Henry V granted a royal 'license to crenellate', which allowed for the construction of the battlement tower above the present-day lodge."

I'm thinking this is likely to be St. Alban's Quadrangle. That being the case it is of 13th Century origin incorporated into Merton College in 1882. I remember the occasion very well :-)) From a College information leaflet - "Merton College is one of the oldest Foundations in the University of Oxford. In 1264 Walter de Merton, Chancellor of England and Bishop of Rochester, established Merton as the first College; a self-governing corporate community with a Warden at its head. The buildings and communal spaces that made up Merton College reflect the activities of Tutors and the Students living, eating, studying and worshipping together. Although many of these buildings are now historic they continue to be used daily." p.s. I don't very often think to look at my photos on black but I think this one actually looks a little better on black :-)
