We have a very pretty wildflower that grows profusely in this area called Vetch (Several varieties including Common and Hairy). It's in the legume (pea) family, which means it's a climbing plant. Climbing means TENDRILS and anyone that knows me, knows how much I love them! Almost exactly a year ago, Steve and I went on a photo walk along the Rogue river and I found a patch of vetch climbing whatever it could find...in this case, it was clinging to a blade of grass! :)
55/366: HFF! Pumpkin Tendril Clinging to Fence

When I decided to work on a garden a couple of years ago, one of the things I wanted was pumpkins. I got lots of varieties and it was a lot of fun to watch them sprout and grow. Pumpkins grow on vines, which means tendrils! I love the way these look, and how incredibly strong they are! I captured this one clinging to the deer fencing that enclosed my front garden.

Dried Up & Still Tied Up: Wild Pea Vine Tendrils

How's THIS for cool?! When wild pea vine tendrils dry up, they are very tiny and hard to see, but once I found a one, I was able to locate more all over the place! This pair of tied up strands was a wonderful find, full of curling goodness! :D
Because the tendrils are blond and the background was light beige, I changed the background color to a tinted monochrome and then added some vignetting to add depth. I then gave it a sandstone texture to give it a more tactile quality.
Droplet-Paned Tendril Circle within a Larger Circl…

I tried very hard to capture this tendril! It was close to the ground and hiding behind leaves. I wanted to get JUST the "droplet pane" in focus while letting the rest of the larger circle fall off into blur and that presented such a challenge! Leaves I moved would move back in the way...droplets kept falling onto the vine and threatening to dislodge the droplets on the circles...and I was getting more and more soaked! But I hoped that after about half a dozen attempts, that maybe one would come out...and I got this one, hooray!!! :D

When I saw this tendril, I instantly pictured that special symbol that you find on sheets of music. My husband immediately said what it looked like, "Oh, it looks like a treble clef! :D

3 more tendril pictures can be found in the notes above! :)
Yesterday I planned to take pictures of Sweet Pea tendrils but a beautiful Red Milkweed Beetle stopped me in my tracks. This morning I was determined to get to my destination! I'd been waiting for the rain to stop and finally it looked like I could sneak out for a photo session, so out I bounced with my camera in hand! Well, no longer than five minutes after I got to the sweet peas, the rain began again, heavy drops plopping onto the vines, splashing onto my camera, and spattering my glasses. However, I decided to stay as long as I could because I hoped that I might capture the droplets on the tendrils, and indeed I did! This picture actually shows the least amount of droplets, but how could I not choose this for my picture of the day? It shows perfectly how I feel about tendrils, and about this very special place, the only spot on our 26 acres where these wild sweet peas grow! This area is magical, a dark spot in our lower forest where only beams of sunlight shine through the trees, and it is here where I also find many of the special mushrooms that I've shared. How lucky it was that I captured the mood of this place without knowing it...only when I saw this on my computer did I discover how special this image was! :)

Peavine Leaves with Droplets

Ever since I was a little kid, I've been crazy about vining plants that have tendrils. I love how they snake their way around whateve is close by, grab hold, and climb higher and higher. We have peavines on our property, so I was on the lookout to find them popping out of the ground and getting ready for spring. Have you noticed that every single macro subject has a different "sweet spot" for focus? I find this very interesting, but it does take time to learn what I should be focusing on. In this case, I started out focusing on the tendril, but the rest of the leaf fell out of focus too fast. If I focused just on the leaf, I lost the tendril. With an F-stop set too high, the background got too clear and distracting. It took me several attempts over a couple of days before I was able to get an image that I was happy with, but I learned so much! I hope you like this too! :)
I've uploaded two other pictures today and I hope you'll visit them too!
Thanks to all of you who have visited and have left comments and favorites! I try to go to all of your pages within a day or two and is a highlight for me to see your beautiful photography! :)
NOTE! I have finally updated my profile and I hope you'll take a look to find out a little more about me and how important all of you are to my experience here on Flickr!

Tendrils

I love vining plants! I especially love vining plants which have beautiful flowers, like Clematis, Morning Glories, and so many others. Plants in the cucumber family are climbing plants too, and send out wonderful tendrils to hold onto anything within range. There are many wild cucumber plants growing wild on our property, so I took the opportunity to take lots of pictures of the part I love best about vines: the tendrils! Here is my first picture to show, and I hope you these swirling tendrils too!
