Pictures for Pam, Day 97: Valentine's Day Rose

14 Feb 2019 59 42 672
(+3 insets!) Another cold, wet, and dreary day greeted me today and I simply didn't have the heart to go outside in the mud and icky weather. However, I did have a lot of fun looking through some of my archive photography and found the perfect picture to post for Valentine's Day. It's officially tomorrow for all of us in the United States, but since so many people on ipernity live in Europe, it's a better idea to post this picture today! Steve and I live near the town of Medford, Oregon, and a large company called Harry & David is located there. They have a huge public garden and specialize in endless species of roses. We've gone there for photo shoots a couple of times and my mind is always spinning by the time we leave because I've photographed so many incredible blossoms. This one in deep, rich red, is the classic Valentine's rose, and so it's my pick of the day. I hope you like it Pam! :D I'm also including some past Valentine cards I've posted. (If you'd like to see more pictures from the Harry & David garden, click on the album to the right and you'll see what I've posted so far.) I hope that everyone has a wonderful and romantic day! Pam, I looked on your photo stream for Valentine's Day pictures and found a lovely golden crocus that bloomed that day in 2014. What a wonderful gift! I wonder if it bloomed for you this year or did it get eaten like all of ours did? Anyway, I hope that you can find something pretty to enjoy on your Valentine's Day this year! *BIG HUGGGGGS* from southern Oregon! Explored on 2/14/19, highest placement, #1.

347/366: Pretty Pansies

13 Dec 2016 19 10 1318
There was a bed of these beautiful pansies at the Harry & David public garden. It was a nice challenge to get the proper depth of field so the front flower was in focus and the ones behind were nice and soft.

346/366: Crystal Droplet on Leaf

12 Dec 2016 16 4 1431
Have you ever noticed how some plants repel water better than others? I found these beautiful, lacy leaves at the Harry & David public garden and noticed perfectly round droplets of water on them from the rain the night before. This one looks like a miniature crystal ball! :)

336/366: Changing of the Guard

I like to challenge myself by trying to create interesting images from something that people wouldn't look at twice. While I was at the Harry & David public garden, I noticed this withered daffodil and loved the shape and texture. Even dead, I find it lovely. All around there were beautiful flowers to grab my attention, but it was an easy thing to stop and appreciate this once-brilliant, yet still interesting blossom. :)

334/366: Hearts and Crystal Tears

02 Dec 2016 11 3 1148
The leaves of roses look like beautiful green hearts with maroon-accented teeth. Add rain drops and the sight is even more lovely!

333/366: Bloody Rose

I am always on the lookout for anything unusual, so I was overjoyed when I found this rose at the Harry & David garden! Explored! :)

332/366: Tears of a Rose Petal

30 Nov 2016 13 6 1043
While visiting the Harry & David public garden about 6 months ago, I noticed some rose petals which had recently fallen to the ground. They didn't look like anything special, so I gave myself a challenge: find a cool image. I stared at the petals and took pictures from many angles until I finally zeroed in on this, which was a planned crop from a larger image. It would turn out to be one of my very favorite pictures from my visit! There are many reasons why it hits the spot for me, and I hope you like it too! :)

331/366: White Beauty

The other day I posted a picture of a pair of these lovely little flowers. Here is another picture I captured which turned out nicely! If you look carefully, you can see the pool of water in the center from the rain the night before. :)

321/366: Lemon-Scented Tarweed: the 161st Flower o…

When Steve and I moved to southern Oregon, I knew I'd love the wildlife and nature on a rural property. But I had no idea how much fun it would be to discover all the different flowers that grew just on our property alone! I began a project which I never finished, to catalog every flower I found. This is one of the flowers to add to my project, the Lemon-Scented Tarweed! It smells like lemon but the plant is covered with sticky resin that clings to everything! I love the flowers though, and we have several varieties that grow here.

320/366: White Blossoms at the Harry & David Garde…

In April, Steve and I went to the Harry & David public garden, where we met up with our good friend, Andy, and his daughter. Although this garden concentrates on many kinds of roses, they also have lots of other flowers too. I don't know what these are called, but I was captivated by them and got many pictures I was happy with!

108/366: Purple Hollyhock

Now here is a flower that will hit you in the face with WOW!!! About a year and a half ago, Steve and I visited the Harry & David garden nearby in southern Medford. They are known for their roses so I wasn't prepared to see this magnificent stalk of flowers that was nearly as tall as I was! What a treat!

99/366: Mottled Rose

11 Apr 2016 10 10 906
Everyone knows that roses come in lots of beautiful colors. In fact, roses can be found in stunning bi-colors...but have you ever seen a MOTTLED one? Steve and I live near the Harry and David company here in Medford--it's a large specialty food shop--and they have a sprawling garden that's open to the public. The highlight of their flora are their seemingly countless varieties of roses. They literally go on for acres! It is a mind-numbing experience when going on a photo shoot because there are unending perfect subjects to photograph. So when I found myself staring in disbelief at a mottled rose, I could hardly believe my eyes! Turns out there are at least a couple-dozen mottled rose plants there to appreciate, and I DID! :)

Harry & David Garden: Glowing Golden Rose

27 Jan 2015 85 28 2283
If you can believe it, there were countless blossoms like this everywhere I turned on my visit to the Harry & David garden. This was also my first opportunity to visit a garden with such a vast array of roses to appreciate. Every single plant seemed special and covered with extra beautiful flowers. My question is: do you think anyone could take a bad picture of a blossom that looks like this?! :) It is such a treat to be able to share some of these images! Explored on January 26, 2015. Harry & David Garden: Orange-Pink Rose

20 Jan 2015 67 22 2130
Such rich and luscious colors in all the roses at the Harry & David garden, it was hard for me to decide what flowers to take pictures of! This one had such a lovely shape to go with its bright orange-pink color...how could I resist? I added a bit of texture to the background, which helped to pop this blossom out of the picture. Harry & David Garden: Lilac Rose

13 Jan 2015 53 28 1895
This stunning and incredibly beautiful lilac rose was at the Harry & David Gardens in Medford, Oregon. These gardens are vast, and even in October, there were flowers everywhere. Truly, it would have taken me at least several long days to appreciate everything there which I wanted to photograph. Overwhelming was definitely the word of the day! I'd heard that the Harry & David gardens were overflowing with countless varieties of roses, but though I felt I was prepared, the sheer number and variety of roses completely blew me away!! Every color you could imagine--even variegated--so many types and sizes, and so many in bloom! It was an incredible show to behold, and I look forward to going back many times! And, by the way, this gorgeous blossom was matched with a wonderful and richly sweet fragrance. PURE HEAVEN! :D Explored on January 13, 2015. Highest placement, #3.

Harry & David Garden: Blanket Flower

06 Jan 2015 50 26 1559
(By the way, the new 10-Week Photo Projects has begun--as of January 5--and it's all about TREES! Please feel free to join in the fun! 10-Week Photo Projects: Trees ) Some months ago, Steve and I visited the gardens of a local company, Harry & David, and they have an incredible rose and flower garden. I got zillions of pictures and would like to post a few as I find the time to do so... This is a Blanket Flower. These incredibly gorgeous blossoms are, if you can believe it, WILDFLOWERS. Once these perennial beauties are established in your garden, they will grow with little care, as they are hardy and drought-resistant. I love them, and would love them in my garden!! Sadly, the seeds that I planted did not sprout, so I'll have to try again this year. For now, behold the majesty of the Blanket Flower, photographed at the Harry & David Gardens.
