Canada Geese Foraging in the Grass

09 Oct 2011 197
Imagine our delight when Laura and I discovered a substantial flock of Canada Geese while we walked through Golden Gate Park. I will never get tired of these intensely beautiful birds and it was such a treat to get so close to them! This image was taken during my trip to San Francisco during September 12-15, 2011.

Flock of Geese

We are blessed to have a huge variety of birds where we live, and here, near the Applegate River, there are many Canadian Geese. As Steve and I were taking pictures of the beautiful old barn with the sunset, we heard the honking of a flock of geese flying overhead. I looked up and got this picture and a few more! YAY!! This photo was taken on October 21, 2011.

Flock of Geese at Sunset

(for those of you who are interested in seeing my "Autumn Show" images, I have uploaded 10 pictures in this batch [16 in the past few days]. Thanks everyone for your comments and your visits to my photostream! I hope you enjoy the show!) (Oh, and yes, I know there are really too many pictures to be uploading at one time but I have too many images I want to put into my Flickr stream so it just can't be helped!) This was one of those incredibly lucky shots that you just can't plan for. Steve and I were taking pictures of the barn I showed in the last set when we heard a flock of geese overhead. I turned, aimed my camera, and hoped for the best. :) By the way, for those of you who may not know, there is a very fun, free Flickr competition site which you might like to take part in. It's called FlickrDuel and features dozens of ongoing competitions, or duels every day. You can enter your pictures into many different categories and vote on contests too. It's another way to enjoy your photography! This image was taken during the month of October, 2011.

A bunch of the geese decided to take off, but instead of trying to get a picture of the geese, I thought it would be more fun getting a picture of Laura while she tried to photograph them! As it worked out, I got a picture of the geese too, yay! :) This image was taken during my trip to San Francisco during September 12-15, 2011.

Geese in a Midnight Huddle

This is a long-exposure close-up of the geese in the pond in front of the factory. There were many of them swimming around separately, but this bunch was very active, swimming around in a circle, huddled together. We think they were probably trying to keep warm on this cold night. This image was taken on Wednesday, November 10, 2100.

"Time flies over us, but leaves it's shadow behind…

As I walked around our smaller meadow, looking for frosty leaves, I heard some geese flying nearby, and looked up while I listened to their wonderful calling. It's such a beautiful sound to hear a flock of geese overhead. This isn't the greatest picture, but it is a special moment for me to capture, smiling with contentment while they flew by. This is one of the joys of living here in the countryside of southern Oregon! :) Nathaniel Hawthorne (July 4, 1804 – May 19, 1864) was an American novelist and short story writer. Low Flying Aircraft

I was taking a look for signs of tadpoles at our pond when I heard the "Honk-Honk" of approaching geese. It's so nice of them to announce their arrival so I can prepare myself to take pictures! I think waterfowl are the Photographer Training Wheel Birds of Flight! :D These birds flew DIRECTLY overhead and then they turned in a circle to fly over my head again, and then AGAIN! I couldn't believe it!! I walked away from the pond in case they meant to land, but after the third pass they circled back the way they came. This is closest I've gotten to a flying bird before with my camera, and I could have almost filled the frame with one of these beauties!! So fantastic!! *high five to all of my amazing bird photographer buddies*
