(+2 insets: one of them is Pam's picture!)
So it's almost 8pm here and we got home about 30 minutes ago. Steve and I drove back to Oregon after a six day visit to see my younger brother and his wife and family just across the Bridge from San Francisco. We had such a fantastic time! In the end we didn't do a lot of stuff but it was exactly the right pace for us. We relaxed, made some delicious food, did some hiking, spent a lot of time with family and had a super time. I also had a terrific time wandering around their property taking pictures inside and out. Couldn't have asked for a better getaway!
Today's picture is for Happy Fence Friday, and what better than to use another image of the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge? This photo was taken during our motorcycle trip a couple of years ago. However, I didn't take it from the back of motorcycle. We parked and took a bunch of shots before heading into the City. I think it's pretty hard to take a bad picture of this lovely bridge! :)
By the way, the other day I posted an abstract view of the Bridge as we were crossing it and I totally forgot to mention something super cool! I would like you to take a look at the two inset images. You will see my picture and you will also see another one. The other is so similar that you might think that I took it too. NO! Pam took that one! Without seeing each other's pictures, we both took two that are totally close in appearance! I find it amazing because that view is unique. And yet, we have the same idea in an inspired image! I just love that.
Pam, it was such fun to look at your San Francisco pictures. I hope that you will be able to post more from your visit because I'm sure you have piles of winning shots that we will all love. I really loved seeing the similarity of our GGB photography too, you are so totally my Pod Sister! Thinking of you every day my dear!

Steve and I spent the day driving from Oregon to the San Francisco Bay Area to stay with my younger brother Brian and his wife Nathalie. It was a lovely drive! Incredible views everywhere, and we saw a mind-boggling sunset over the Bay, which we were crossing at the time...unbelievable reflections and colors everywhere!
This is going to be really short because we're off to eat and hang out!
This picture is another one from our motorcycle trip a couple of years ago. As we rode over our beloved Golden Gate Bridge, I pointed my camera up and got this! :)
Please forgive my lack of commenting today, and it's going to be severely limited for the next week, but will get back to normal once we return! :)
Pam, I know you've been here!! How wonderful that you've set foot on this remarkable bridge. I'm thinking of you and hoping you're feeling good today!

GGB: Fort Point and Coastal View

Below the bridge is Fort Point, built by the Spanish in 1769, and is a wonderful, fascinating landmark worth a photography trip all by itself! When I was a little girl, my grandparents took me there for a visit, and upon seeing real cannonballs for the first time, one of the historians there told me that if I could pick one up, I could take it home with me! To the delight and amusement of all who saw me straining at the task, I really did try!! :D

Talk about anticipation! I could not WAIT to get out of the car and hot-foot it onto the bridge for up-close-and-personal shots! I saw this view and had to take a picture...what a pretty sight!!

GGB Bay View: Alcatraz and Boats

Once I got onto the bridge, I kept seeing boats passing under it, making their way in and out of the Bay. I was so happy that I could see Alcatraz in the distance, and got this image with a sailboat, tugboat and a freighter in the Bay!

GGB: Disappearing into the Mist

As I walked to the South Tower, I got to take one of the pictures I really wanted! Where did the bridge go?! :D As a child, I would stare upwards out of the car window straining to see the tops of the towers through the mist...I rarely could!

I really enjoyed seeing the various boats entering the bay and could have happily taken countless images of just these, but alas, time was ticking so I spent most of my bridge time focused on it! :)

GGB: Rivets Along the Barrier

I'm always on the lookout for an interesting way to picture something fairly ordinary. These rivets with the lines and angles have their own character and beauty!

(for those of you who are interested in seeing my San Francisco trip images, I have uploaded 9 pictures in this batch [6 yesterday, 7 the day before yesterday, 11, 10 and 11 before that]. Thanks everyone for your comments and your visits to my photostream! I hope you enjoy the show!)
The Golden Gate Bridge is the landmark I identify most strongly with San Francisco and it is considered a modern Wonder of the World. I have crossed it thousands of times in my lifetime--by car, bike, and by foot--and its beauty has never deminished in my eyes since understanding what it was as a small child. I am proud to say that my father's father actually worked on the construction of this bridge! My brilliant mother designed a quilted block which won a placement in a very special GGB 50th Anniversary Quilt presented to and exhibited by the Golden Gate Bridge District Office. This incredibly beautiful, amazing bridge is part of who I am as a hometown San Franciscan, and I love it dearly.
Many of you might feel a little sad for me that it was a foggy day for these pictures, but I was delighted because this is how the bridge looks most days of the year! I hoped it would be foggy so that I could take pictures of the bridge how I love it most...disappearing into the mist!

This image was taken from a point in the Presedio, and was my first image of the bridge. My father was disappointed that it was so foggy, but I explained that it was exactly what I was hoping for! YAY for fog!! :D

Golden Gate Bridge: 1,200+ Suicides
24 Sep 2011 |
|
|
This barrier is fairly high to keep visitors safe, but those who are determined can climb over and leap to their deaths. Sadly, there have been more suicides from this beautiful bridge than any other in the whole world. :( Precautionary fencing cannot keep people from throwing themselves off and the suicide prevention phones located along the walkway don't save everyone.

I saw this along the walkway leading to the bridge and appreciated its simple beauty. There were many of these set in the cement walls.

This is one of the images I'd been looking forward to taking! I hoped the fog would be so thick that I wouldn't be able to see where they attached to the suspension cable at the top, and I was overjoyed to get exactly what I wanted!
