281/366: Rough Eyelash

That's the name of this wildflower, which grows all over our property in the late spring. Even though its leaves and stems are very sticky and leave a strong scent that isn't wonderful, the blossom is beautiful and unique. I love them! :)

There are two pictures in notes above! Would you believe me if I told you that this bud is the same kind of flower as I shared yesterday for my 365 image?! Such amazing flowers! Rough Eyelash blossoms are red, pink or white on the back of the flower and white on the front, so the buds can be found in many different shades. I thought it would be fun to get bud pictures in several colors to share because they are so pretty! Rough Eyelash Bud in Pink

The petals look a little bit like fingers, don't they?! :D From Wiki: This is an unassuming small annual plant native to the northwestern United States. It raises slender, fuzzy stems, atop which bloom a daisylike flower head. Its ray florets are white with purple markings and the center of the flower is packed with white disc florets with purple anthers. The fruit is a dark achene which often bears a pappus of a few stiff, light colored bristles. The rough eyelash grows in forests at some elevation. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blepharipappus

Rough Eyelash Bud in White

I never realized how cool flowers can look in bud form until I began taking pictures of them. Now I consider buds as pretty as the open flowers, and they are often fascinating in form, like these flowers with their "opening finger" appearance! :)

One picture in a note on the image! :D Other notes too! :) These beautiful flowers are growing all over our meadow right now and I absolutely love how there are "flowers within the flower" in the center! Socrates ( 469 BC – 399 BC) was a classical Greek Athenian philosopher. Credited as one of the founders of Western philosophy, he is an enigmatic figure known chiefly through the accounts of later classical writers, especially the writings of his students Plato and Xenophon and the plays of his contemporary Aristophanes. Many would claim that Plato's dialogues are the most comprehensive accounts of Socrates to survive from antiquity. Wikipedia: Socrates Explored on June 22, 2013. Highest placement, page 5.

This morning I meant to visit our lower forest to see if the wild sweet peas were blooming, but I just couldn't get past these beautiful Rough Eyelash flowers that were all staring up in reverence at the sun! Walter "Walt" Whitman (May 31, 1819 – March 26, 1892) was an American poet, essayist and journalist. A humanist, he was a part of the transition between transcendentalism and realism, incorporating both views in his works. Whitman is among the most influential poets in the American canon, often called the father of free verse. His work was very controversial in its time, particularly his poetry collection Leaves of Grass, which was described as obscene for its overt sexuality. Wikipedia: Walt Whitman

Amor! Two Bees on Rough Eyelash Blossom

I was taking a picture of this flower when a bee landed on the blossom, followed by another one, which landed on the female! I took exactly two pictures before the male zoomed away, followed by the female! It's kind of funny to see the pictures in order: flower, blurry bees on flower, this picture, and the flower all by itself again! :D I will admit that this image suffers from contrast issues, but I thought it was pretty lucky to get the pair together and I hope that you like it too! :) (By the way, if you know what kind of bee this is, I'd love to label it correctly. I think it might be a Leaf-Cutter, but I'm not sure. Unfortunately this angle doesn't help!)
