his flower is a gorgeous little Another new surprise for me to discover while looking for new species! These beautiful little flowers grow around the banks of our seasonal streams and also in our lower forest. Because they are found all over western North America, they also have the name "Common Clarkia", but they're just too pretty for such a plain name, don't you think?! The blossoms measure about 3/4" in diameter and colors range from light pink to hot pink to burgundy. If you would like to know more about this pretty flower, Wiki has a page here: Wiki: Diamond Clarkia (Clarkia rhomboidea) By the way, I've uploaded two other pictures today and I hope you'll visit them too! Thanks to all of you who have visited and have left comments and favorites! I try to go to all of your pages within a day or two and is a highlight for me to see your beautiful photography! :)

Normally, this picture would be the one I would choose to show for the main image of this flower, but the image from above is so crazy looking that I wanted to show both pictures as main images. :) I think this is one of the most interesting flowers on our property! :)

Foothill Clover: The 147th Flower of Spring & Summ…

This crazy thing is a flower, shown from directly above! Below is an image from the side to show what this unusual clover looks like. Isn't it interesting and different?! When I first saw this flower, I thought it must be dying because it seems like it's falling over. But upon closer inspection I discovered that it grows this way, like a mop! Amazing! Foothill Clover is native to the Pacific Northwest and can be found from southern Washington to Baja, California, where it can be found in meadows and open woods. This flower has a unique feature of blossoming upright but then tipping over to assume its unusual "mop" shape.. It was once a common food eaten by Native Americans. If you would like to know more about this flower, Wiki has a tiny source here and includes a picture of this flower before it flops over into its "mop" shape: Wiki: Foothill Clover (Trifolium ciliolatum)

The flower family of Clarkia includes more than 40 species, and I'm very happy that there are at least five species on our property! This little beauty is small, about 1/2" in diameter, and has four distinctive magenta spots on each petal. Clarkia species are all native to western North America, although there is one species that grows in Argentina, South America. If you would like to know more about these gorgeous flowers, Wiki has a page here: Wiki: Clarkia By the way, I've uploaded two other pictures today and I hope you'll visit them too! Yet another subspecies of Clarkia, this one is larger than the others and resembles another flower that grows here called Dwarf Checkerbloom. Winecup Clarkia often has spots on its petals and has a slightly different shape. Purple Clarkia is fairly small in size, about 1/2"-1" in diameter. It's native to the Pacific Northwest and ranges in color including pink, purple, and deep wine red. If you would like to know more about Clarkia species, Wiki has a source here: Wiki: Clarkia

Snowberry: the 135th Flower of Spring & Summer! (4…

A few of these bushes grow down by our front gate, and are favorites of bees and other insects. The blossoms are only about 1/4" in diameter, but as you can see, they're beautiful little pink bells when seen up close! :) After flowering, they make pretty white berries which are gobbled up by the wildlife but are poisonous to humans. (A picture of a snowberry is below!) Snowberry plants are part of a group of about 15 species that are found in Northern and Central America and are a common shrub. Their family name is "Symphoricarpos", which means "bear together fruit", referring to the tightly-packed clusters of berries. Some species of this plant are also used for landcaping. If you would like to know more about this plant, Wiki has a good source here: Wiki: Snowberry (Symphoricarpos)

The wonderful blackberry, a beautiful flower which results in my favorite berry! Many hate this bush because it is so hard to remove when unwanted, but for people like Steve and me, blackerry blossoms have us dreaming about the upcoming berries and the yummy treats! All my life, my family has loved blackberries. My mom and I used to go blackberry picking near our summer cabin in northern California, and mom would make the most amazing jams and jellies, pancakes, pies and cobblers! Steve and I were very happy to find that there are blackberries growing on our property, and every year we enjoy a bountiful harvest from July through September! All hail the great blackberry! HUZAH!! HUZAH!! HUZAH!!! :D This species is native to Armenia and southwest Asia. It was introduced as a cultivar in many places around the world and immediately spread all over. It's a very common species in the Pacific Northwest, where it can be found wherever there it a source of water, especially along creeks and rivers. If you would like to know more about this yummy berry plant, Wiki has a great page here: Wiki: Himalayan Blackberry (Rubus armeniacus)
