A Surprise in the Forest [Explore]

17 Dec 2012 1 290
While out taking pictures one day, I noticed something out of the corner of my eye. Holding very still, I waited. Emerging from behind a clump of moss, this tiny pair of mushrooms moved into the forest glade, looking around to make sure it was safe to come out. It appeared to be two friends, out for a stroll. The tall, slender one led the way, peering around and looking for any sign of movement. The short, stout one was very nervous and clung close to its brave friend. They glided through the tiny meadow like little forest spirits, and as they disappeared into the woods on the other side, I heard the sound of their laughter, like the sound of tiny bells. Thanks to all of you who have visited and have left comments and favorites! I try to go to all of your pages within a day or two and is a highlight for me to see your beautiful photography! I've been buried in another project and haven't been able to leave comments for the last couple of days but I'm hoping to make some time today or tomorrow--thanks so much for your patience! :) Explored on December 17, 2012. Father & Son and Words About Wisdom [Explore]

20 Dec 2012 1 301
Once I discovered that our forest is full of little enchanted mushroom people, I am very quiet and careful when I visit, and sometimes I'll see them gliding around the floor like little magical sprites. On this day I peered around a tree and found these two staring out into the trees. I listened and could just hear that it was a father and son having a conversation. "Father, how do you get wisdom?" asked the young mushroom as he stood close and wondered about the world. "My son, wisdom is experience that you gather over the course of your life...but here are some words to think about from a truly wise old man: There are three methods to gaining wisdom. The first is reflection, which is the highest. The second is limitation, which is the easiest. The third is experience, which is the bitterest. ~ Confucius The son leaned on his father's shoulder and sighed, thinking about the words. I crept away then to leave them alone, and smiled to myself. There is much to be learned from these mushrooms! :) Thanks to all of you who have visited and have left comments and favorites! The Old Man and his Family

07 Dec 2012 214
This mushroom stood in front of his big family, old and proud. The life of a mushroom is only a few days, and in that time it must grow and then disperse its spores before fading away. That's a lot of work for a little mushroom, and this one is clearly very tired and ready to rest back in the earth where he came from! If you'd like more information about mushrooms, I found a very nice site here! www.allaboutmushrooms.com/

Glowing, Ghostly Mushroom

09 Dec 2012 286
Our lower forest has two different areas. One area is more open and lets in much more light. The other part is darker and stays wetter, and thus, is a haven for mushrooms! As I was walking around one day, I looked down and discovered a whole colony of beautiful white mushrooms growing up through the fallen leaves. This one was about 1/2 an inch tall! :)

Gills of a Mushroom

It's always wonderful to get a shot of a mushroom when you can see the gills, but did you know that not all mushrooms have them? Gills are just one way that mushrooms disperse their spores, which are kind of like seeds. Mushrooms also release spores via pores, teeth, through pressurized holes, they drop to the ground, and there are other methods too! If you would like to know more about the way mushrooms release their spores, take a look at this page: Mushroom Spore Dispersion

You never know what you'll find when you walk quietly in a meadow. On a wet and rainy morning, you might just find a mushroom enjoying the beautiful day and thinking about the words of great philosophers. I heard him whispter this as I quietly took my picture and passed by, "Wisdom begins in wonder." ~ Socrates By the way, I've uploaded two other pictures today and I hope you'll visit them too! Another mushroom picture that evokes a quote! Do you know who Harriet Tubman was? From Wiki: Harriet Tubman (born Araminta Harriet Ross; 1820 – March 10, 1913) was an African-American abolitionist, humanitarian, and Union spy during the American Civil War. Born into slavery, Tubman escaped and subsequently made more than thirteen missions to rescue more than 70 slaves using the network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad. If you would like to read more about this remarkable woman, Wiki's article is great: Wiki: Harriet Tubman Thanks to all of you who have visited and have left comments and favorites! Ginormous, Humongus Mushroom Monster! [Explore]

15 Dec 2012 1 292
Two fun words to describe this ridiculously large mushroom, which measures about 12" at it's largest dimension! HOLY COW, that's BIG! I found it growing with about 10 others in a circle around a pile of brush when I was on a walk with the dogs! :) (You can see the brush pile just behind it!) "Ginormous" was probably first used around 1948 and is a contraction of gigantic and enormous. "Humongus" is another slang word meaning extremely large or huge , and was first used as college slang in about 1967. Thanks to all of you who have visited and have left comments and favorites! Tiki Huts and New Friends [Explore]

24 Dec 2012 228
On a day between showers, I went to visit the top of our ridge because I felt the magic in the air coming from there...I might just find some mushroom fairies! When I got to the top, I paused to listen as I looked around, and heard the tiny tinkle of laughter. Turning to see, I found these two mushrooms, which looked like little tiki huts! Smiling warmly at them, they approached as near as they dared, and one of them presented me with a strand of grass as a gesture of goodwill and friendship. As I took the grass and glowed with happiness, I heard him say, "The best mirror is a friend’s eye." ~ Unknown With that, they turned and disappeared back into the trees. I stood and relished the feeling of acceptance I got from these secretive people as I stared at the tiny strand of grass in the palm of my hand. How lucky I am! :) Explored on December 24, 2012. The Kiss [Explore]

On another quiet hunt for little mushroom fairies, I happened upon this darling couple, standing near the edge of the woods, whispering quietly together and enjoying the cool, moist day. As they cuddled close with obvious affection, I got this picture as one kissed the other on the head, and I heard him say to her, "Love is composed of a single soul inhabiting two bodies." ~ Aristotle Explored (Flickr) on December 22, 2012. Friendship [Explore]

Last February, Steve and I went on a photo walk along the Rogue River and I found a mossy old log. Creeping over to it and looking close, I found this pair of beautiful mushrooms glowing in the afternoon sun. They made me smile and think about friendship.
