150/366: Frog on the Wall

We have a seasonal pond that dries up before all of the tadpoles can transform into froglets, so I step in by collecting the stragglers and putting them into a wading pool in our front yard. This artificial pond gives them the time they need to finish growing, and in return, I get to visit the cutie pies every day and take pictures! This was a picture I took back in 2012! :)

Flickr Banner...Grrrrrr....

Wow. I really HATE this Flickr banner requirement. The image I upload gets totally grainy even though my file was clean when I uploaded it! *sigh* I also really, really, really hate that this is considered as one of my uploads. If I make it private, it won't show up as a banner because it's not public. Totally annoying. Hmm, but I can change the date to make it disappear...I shall make it so! :D

Lucky's Pond: Graduation Day! (best viewed large!)…

(If you want to know about Lucky, please visit this picture and read the story! :) My Friend Lucky Would you just LOOK at these cutie pies?!!! I couldn't believe my eyes when I took a peek in the pond a couple of weeks ago and found all of these tiny froglets lined up and ready for a graduation picture! Yes, it's that time!! The day finally came when most of the froglets hopped off to find their fortunes on the property surrounding Lucky's Pond. A couple of days after I took this picture, there were almost no more froglets left. I see a froglet now once every couple of days, though there are still many tadpoles swimming around enjoying themselves and happy to continue being babies! (Some tadpoles delay their metamorphosis for up to six months.) It's been such fun taking pictures of these guys and sharing what I've learned about frogs and tadpoles. I have many more adorable images, but for now, I'm going to stop posting pictures as a daily event. Instead, I'll put up a froglet or tadpole picture every week or so, since we all love them so! Thanks so much for all of your fantastic comments and encouragement, it's made me feel so great knowing that everyone has enjoyed this project as much as I have! For those of you who didn't read my update a few days ago, we'll be keeping Lucky's Pond in place forever, and I'll be building the land up around this kiddy pool with rocks and dirt so that it will be level with the lip of the pool when I'm done. We'll always keep it as a froggy sanctuary, with its screen on top so that the wildlife doesn't empty the pond by drinking all the water. What a wonderful experience this has been! Long live Lucky and all of his friends at Lucky's Pond!!! Hooray!!! By the way, I've uploaded two other pictures today and I hope you'll visit them too! Thanks to all of you who have visited and have left comments and favorites! I try to go to all of your pages within a day or two and is a highlight for me to see your beautiful photography! :) Explored on August 14, 2012, placement at #208.

Lucky's Pond is Full of Life!! (STORY TIME!!! :D)

All of you who've been visiting my stream for a while know about my little friend, Lucky , and his pond, which is actually a kiddy pool which we've kept full since last July, and it's a permanent fixture now, filled in around the sides with dirt and ramps that make it easy for critters to get out. About a month ago, frogs began singing down at the seasonal pond, and I wondered...you see, when a tadpole turns into a frog and hops away from its pond, it will return to that pond to breed the next season. I know that there were at least 100 froglets that grew up and left Lucky's pond over the summer and fall, and I wondered...what would happen in the springtime? So, you can imagine the overjoyed smile on my face when I heard the first frog begin to sing at Lucky's Pond a month ago!!! Since then, there have been about half a dozen frogs singing for mates. By the way, did you know that only males croak? At night I would lay in bed, smiling up to the ceiling and thinking about the fact that I was most likely responsible for those frogs singing down there! Would there be any females? I was very excited to find out as the weeks passed by. I'd been looking every few days without finding any evidence of froggy procreation. That is, until yesterday!!! As usual, I looked very carefully, but this time I saw one!!! A little, tiny pollywog, only about 1/8" long, snuggling up to the side of the pool! Then I saw ANOTHER! AND ANOTHER!! GREAT SCOTT!! WE HAVE BABY FROGGIES AT LUCKY'S POND AGAIN!!!! HOORAY!!!! I could hardly contain my excitement as I raced upstairs to tell Steve what I found!! He was as delighted as I was, and we beamed at each other of this happy news. I got my camera and took some practice shots but realized I really needed my flash to get a reasonable image, and decided to wait before trying again. So, today I went out with my camera and macro flash. While I was taking pictures, I was amazed at all the life in the pond! The water was teeming with countless tiny critters, some of them nearly as large as the tadpoles! I spent a long time slowly making my way around the entire pool, looking closely at the little guys moving around. I also found what I hoped to find: masses upon masses of frog eggs that will be hatching in the next few weeks...I AM SO EXCITED!!!!!! Isn't it wonderful news!!! Lucky's back, with lots and lots of brothers and sisters, and zillions more to come!!! WELCOME HOME, LUCKY!!! HOORAY!!! IT'S PARTY TIME AGAIN AT LUCKY'S POND!!!
