Steve and I went on an photo outing a year ago that took us to a trail that meanders along the beautiful Rogue River. I was delighted to find Campion flowers there, because they are such wonderful subjects to photograph. In the past I have only studied the blossoms, but it was later in the year and the flowers were all going to seed. In the late afternoon, I turned to see this pod glowing with the sun's last rays of the day.
21/366: Damselfly with Lunch

Last May, Steve and I planned to go on a photography outing with our local club. Upon arriving at the lake, we discovered that it was both freezing cold and extremely windy, so we drove home. On the way back, we decided to stop at a spot along the Rogue River for a photo walk. It ended up being a lot of fun and I managed to capture lots of cool subjects!
I had been focusing on a lupine when I noticed something flying by. Peeking out from behind my camera, I saw this damselfly land, take off, and land again in the same place. Creeping closer, I started clicking away, and got several images before it flew away. However, it hadn't gone far and I saw it land on a stem of grass several feet away. This time I was able to get extremely close, and I finally figured out why. When it took off the first time it caught a gnat, and landing the second time it had a tasty meal to distract it while I got my pictures! Hooray!!

One of my 365 Project pals, Zandrsmum (Karyn Mitchell), took some lovely pictures the other day which featured very soft, lovely images which were much more about the feeling and impression of the picture than the clarity of what you could see. I was very inspired by this and today I thought it would be fun to give it a go myself! Mine is quite different because hers is at an ocean beach and this is a river with limited distance for soft bokeh, but it has its own character! I hope you like it! :)
Snowberries with Stick Bokeh

This was another picture of snowberries that I liked. Steve preferred this one to the one I picked for my 365...what do you think? :)
Beautiful Tree Seeds

I found a bunch of small trees which were covered with these beautiful tassels of seeds. I loved the texture and two-tone of black and cream. I was happy to get so many that were crisp, a surprise because it was quite breezy on the river and these tassels waved merrily back and forth, shimmering in the late afternoon sun. I got pictures with various backgrounds: clear blue sky, seed tassels in various bokeh, and this tree in various bokehs. I asked Steve to help me pick and he liked this one the most. I hope you like it! :)

Today Steve and I went on a bike ride and this time I remembered to take my camera!! We stopped at a Rogue River boat launch and while Steve kicked back to relax and listen to an audio story, I wandered happily along the bank with my camera in hand! There were many lovely things to take pictures of! I especially like these dried-up Snowberries with fun, artsy bokeh behind. You guys would have laughed to see me forcing my way into the bushes to get this angle! One misstep and I'd have tripped and landed in the river or face-first in a blackberry bush, ack! So I was very, very careful while I got into position. I couldn't get all the way around, so some of the berries are in the shade, but I captured the glowing translucence of the sun shining through! YAY!

(If you have a moment, I entered this picture and a write-up about the Palmerton Arboretum into a contest, and it would be wonderful if you would go there and "Like" the picture if you like my story and image! :) Weekly Writing and Photography Contest: Palmerton Arboretum )
Yesterday Steve and I went on another Sunday Lunch ride, which started at the beautiful Palmerton Arboretum in Rogue River. I have taken many pictures there and never tire of the amazing trees and plants there.
This is the national tree of Chile, known as a Monkey Puzzle Tree or Chilean Pine Tree. However, I like to call it the Amazing Dr. Seuss Tree! It's covered with branches that twist and turn in all directions, and every inch is covered with spines! Totally spectacular to see and easily my favorite plant at the arboretum.
More information about this tree from Wikipedia:
Araucaria araucana (commonly called the monkey puzzle tree, monkey tail tree, Chilean pine, or pehuén) is an evergreen tree growing to 40 metres (130 ft) tall with a 2 metres (7 ft) trunk diameter. The tree is native to central and southern Chile and western Argentina. Araucaria araucana is the hardiest species in the conifer genus Araucaria. Because of the great age of this species it is sometimes described as a living fossil and can live as long as 1,000 years!
Thanks to my dear Chilean friend Noelegroj (Jorge Leon Cabello) , who so kindly told me what kind of tree this was!! Please make sure to visit his photostream when you can, as his photography of Chile is incredible!!
