Westbound on the old Feather River route (Western Pacific), about 10 miles east of Gerlach, Nevada.

Looking southeast. Black Rock desert in the distance. You can just barely see the eponymous black rock; it's at the right tip of the blued-by-distance ridge that's not quite to the horizon. I've marked it with a note.

"Playa" is literally "beach" in Spanish, but in the deserts of North America it also means a dry lake bed. Presumably it's a Mexican-Spanish usage imported into English.
