This spectacular peak (8761 ft/ 2670 m) on the main Sierra Nevada crest is unnamed. Picture taken from the junction of the Coldstream Trail with the Pacific Crest Trail, which can be seen crossing the flank of the ridge ahead on the right. Looking south; Lake Tahoe is visible in the distance on the left, below the skylined range.

Well, that's what we're calling it, anyway, because some mustangs were hanging around. Apparently, however, it's officially unnamed.
Anyway, this is another small closed basin in the Virginia Range, Nevada, that is holding an extraordinary amount of water this year due to the heavy rain and snow last season. It was completely dry in June 2009 (left inset) and May 2012 (middle inset), but contained a little water in February 2011 (right inset).

Sub-peak looming over the Red Mountain mining district to the west, Colorado. If I'm reading the USGS topo map correctly, the elevation is 13359 ft (4072 m). Yes, we're in the Rockies here--in the San Juan Mountains, to be exact. There are a couple of small snow patches still visible.
