Of some kind, possibly a rough-shouldered hawk based on whatbird.com. Someone with better bird ID skills than mine (a low bar;) feel free to comment! Sierra Valley, California, just outside Sierraville on CA 49.

Hawk that decided I was too close for comfort, even with the telephoto-- Washoe Valley, Nevada. This appears to be a northern goshawk ( Accipiter gentilis ), which is an unusual occurrence--they're more typically found in aspen groves in the nearby mountains, not down here in the exurb.
