Off the paved bike trail in Red Canyon, Utah, which parallels Utah SR 12. This is the main route into Bryce Canyon National Park, but we're heading away from Bryce here. It's downhill!

Looking west. Red Canyon (which drops off ahead beyond the obvious break in slope into the red rock exposures) holds Utah SR 12, the main highway into Bryce Canyon National Park. (The turnoff into the park is a couple of miles behind the photo point.) UT 12 thru the canyon is paralleled by a paved bike trail, seen here, and it's a really mellow bike ride. Or at least it is if you do it in the downhill direction, with a car waiting at the lower trailhead, as we did. ;) The insets show various views along the trail. When this pic was taken the Park Service was in the process of extending the bike trail into the park, which would be a nice ride too!

Mountain mahogany ( Cercocarpus spp.), clinging to a slope above Red Canyon in the Pine Nut Range, western Nevada. A very typical shrub/small tree in the higher elevations in the Great Basin. Sometimes they get tall enough to be almost a tree, as here. Often, though, they make absolutely impenetrable thickets!

Not a place to meet the F-250 coming the other way! Red Canyon mining district, above (yes!) Red Canyon in the Pine Nut Mountains, Douglas County, Nevada. Looking south. The district was worked for gold and silver beginning in the 1860s, and there has evidently been more recent activity, probably associated with the run-ups in precious metal prices ca. 1980 and since 2000.
