Fish Lake

Another one of those generic names! This Fish Lake is a natural high alpine lake (elevation ~8500 ft, 2700 m) in central Utah. It fills the low part of a fault-bounded valley; i.e., a graben. The monsoon rains were in fine form! Looking (more or less) south. The inset shows a slightly different view.

Armageddon?

Thunderhead catching the sunset rays east of Naturita, Colorado. We later had a good gully-washer in the wee hours! Fortunately the roof on the new trailer proved to be waterproof. This is called the "monsoon" locally, and it's not just a metaphor. There is a North American monsoon, which is less well-defined but due to the same mechanisms as the original, with the Gulf of Mexico standing in for the Indian Ocean. It extends over the US southwest, occasionally extending as far as the Sierra Nevada in California, and begins around the first of July.

Muddy with the monsoon. Looking south. The prominent butte on the right is Assembly Hall Peak; Window Blind Peak is the farther one on the left. San Rafael Swell, Utah.

Dolores River, Colorado, muddy with the monsoon rains. In places the water looked like chocolate milk! The shrub in the foreground is the native willow.

Runoff!

Aftermath of the monsoon

Damage on the Cascade Falls trail due to runoff. It was the 6th strongest rainfall on record at Zion National Park, about 30 miles south. Utah, USA.
