Where the hot spring ends up--

Pool where the outflow from the hot spring (adjacent photo) collects. It supports vegetation and apparently is drinkable by livestock; the value of surface water in this area is suggested by the sign on the pool (left inset). This area is in the vicinity of the Burning Man counterculture festival, held in late summer in the Black Rock desert, and perhaps there had been some problems with unauthorized diversions by campers!

The sign reads, "These waters are entirely dedicated to livestock use from Jan. 1-Dec. 31 each year. NRS [Nevada Revised Statutes] makes any person who unlawfully diverts this livestock water guilty of a misdemeanor."
So, watch out! As I comment elsewhere, this area is in the vicinity of the Burning Man countercultural festival held in late summer every year, and there may have been problems with diversions by campers! The flat in the distance is Black Rock playa, where the festival is held a bit south (to the left) of here.
Ridge of hot spring deposits

Extending east, almost linearly, from the currently active spring. It appears that a fault or fissure localized the spring.

The spring itself, emerging from the ground on top of the mound of deposits it's laid down. Here it's too hot to put a finger in, but still cool enough for thermophilic algae.

Actively precipitating salts, and cool enough to support an algae population. It's about the temperature of the hot water from the tap. At the east edge of the Black Rock Desert, Nevada, right on the Jackson Ranch road. Yes, this area has geothermal potential, but it's protected from development by its proximity to the Black Rock wilderness. The left inset is a close-up of the spring itself, on the top of this sinter mound. The right inset is a view east from the top of the mound, showing an elongate ridge of spring deposits. Apparently a fault or fissure localizes the spring; hence the linear form of the deposits.
The outflow from the spring makes a little pond that evidently is valuable for livestock (adjacent photo).
Young bighorn ram

Probably a desert bighorn, Ovis canadensis nelsoni . On the road between Empire and Sulphur, Nevada, south of the Black Rock Desert in northern Nevada and a bit east of Trego Hot Springs. This is an unusual occurrence! Maybe this guy is still trying to find a territory. In any case, we were delighted to see him. He'd decided by this point we might be a threat so is moving away.
