Little Humboldt River

Well, yes. Not exactly a "river" by the standards of lots of places. But it's got water! Looking west (downstream); about 5-10 miles downstream the river bends south to join the main Humboldt by Winnemucca, Nevada. The snowcapped mountains on the skyline are the Santa Rosa Range, with peaks just under 10,000 ft. Much of the high country there is now wilderness.

Greeley Crossing

Down in the drainage, where the road crosses the North Fork of the Little Humboldt River, which is emerging from the canyon to the left. In extreme northern Nevada, maybe 20 miles from the Oregon line. As far as I've been able to determine, this was an old stage route, probably from Boise, Idaho to connect to the transcontinental railroad at Winnemucca, Nevada. It's now a graded (not paved!) county road. The white spot just to the right of the canyon mouth is the roof of an abandoned shed. The insert was taken from below the canyon, looking up. There was even running water this early in the season!

The Mighty Little Humboldt

With water and everything! Actually, it's just the North Fork of the Little Humboldt, but that leads to too long a title for an embedded note. Where it emerges from its canyon above Greeley Crossing. Northern Humboldt County, Nevada.

"The Hot Springs"

A hot spring right alongside the Little Humboldt River, Nevada, between Paradise Valley and Chimney Dam Reservoir. The title is the name as it appears on the 7.5' USGS topo map--kind of generic! The contorted rock around is travertine, a freshwater limestone deposited by the spring over time. The unsavory-looking greenish-rusty floating circular things are not lily pads but algal mats. This spring is cool enough to support thermophilic algae, but it's too hot for anything else. Downstream, where the outlet flows into the Little Humboldt, people have improvised a hot tub (inset), but we didn't try it.

Grand Canyon of the North Fork of the Little Humbo…

Well, yes. It's kind of a cumbersome name, and it's not official. But it seemed appropriate! This canyon is little known and doesn't even have any vehicle access, but has its charms. It's now part of a wilderness study area. There is a vague drainage divide around here, too; the Little Humboldt drains into the Great Basin, but a few miles north the drainages flow into the Owyhee, which flows into the Snake, which then joins the Columbia. The inset has another view--I couldn't decide which I liked better.

Chimney Dam Reservoir

On the Little Humboldt River in northern Nevada. It's nowhere near full, but at least there's water after the better water season last winter. It had been hard-hit by the drought as well.
