Off the Charity Valley trail. Sierra Nevada, California.

Another specimen for my collection from California's Sierra Nevada, here rooted improbably in granite bedrock. Somewhere off the Charity Valley trail. The inset shows this tree with another farther up the ridge to the right.

The horizontal scar above my wife's head is probably from wire when the tree was used as a fencepost years ago.

Which I couldn't fit into the frame. This tree is off the Tahoe Rim Trail near Watson Lake, off the north end of Lake Tahoe in California's Sierra Nevada. See the insert for the scale. We suspect that the prominent horizontal scar visible in the insert is from wire when the tree was used as a fencepost in its younger years.

Beside the Pacific Crest Trail about 2 miles south of Echo Summit, in California's Sierra Nevada. This is another tree high above its usual range that has grown exceedingly large--I couldn't fit it all in the frame. The inset shows the scale! Elevation here is a bit less than 8200 ft (~2500 m).

Yet Another Giant Juniper. This one is next to Dardanelles Lake in the Sierra Nevada, off the Tahoe Rim Trail. California, USA.
