Waterfall, Big Box Canyon

10 Apr 2019 2 2 426
Waterfall, Big Box Canyon, east side of the Stillwater Range above Dixie Valley, central Nevada. It's a good water year to be flowing like this! Check the still photos in the album for more about Big Box Canyon and its geologic significance. I tried to embed this video as a PiP in one of the stills, but that evidently doesn't work. I made an attempt at some real-time narration while taking the video--I figured no one will have a problem following an American accent! ;)

Spillway spilling

Bypass spillway flowing at Davis Creek Dam, in the headwaters of the Middle Fork of the Feather River, California. This hasn't happened in a number of years! The concrete spillway itself ends near the top behind the pine tree, and the water just makes a waterfall from there. The hydropower capacity is also maxed out--that's the tailrace from the turbines in the foreground (outlined).

Secret Creek

What's "secret", I guess, is that thru here it's not usually a creek at all! The presence of flowing water is another reflection of the heavy snowfall last season. The insets show a view downstream (right), and driftwood wrapped around the juniper at the left edge of the picture (left). Apparently the water was running a couple of feet deep back in January or so!

A River Again!

18 Mar 2017 5 6 694
Carson River a few miles downstream from the bridge where US 95A crosses, in an area that's now part of Ft. Churchill State Park, upstream from Lahontan Reservoir. The Carson is another landlocked river; it rises in the Sierra Nevada and ends in the Carson Sink east of Fallon, Nevada. With the drought the last few years, it had dried up completely by this point; the inset shows a view (altho not the exact same view, sorry) in October 2012. But already by last November the water season was improved to the point the river was flowing here; and this was a couple of months _before_ the recent flooding! Map location is approximate.
