"Tailings" ("tails" for short) are the waste material that's been processed thru the mill. They thus are very fine-grained, almost flour-like. It is not a general synonym for any old mining debris!

The BLM hasn't gotten around to filling in this one... Como was a gold mining camp that first saw activity in the 1860s, and then intermittently up to the 1930s or so. It was the first county seat of Lyon County! Current population: 0

I don't know what this porchlike affair was for. The edge of a rotating drum, probably a crusher and sorter, is visible at far right.

Como was the first county seat of Lyon County. Current population: 0. A wildfire swept thru here a few years back; hence the burned trees.
