Looking a bit more west of south. The San Rafael River is visible in the canyon below. San Rafael Swell, Utah.

San Rafael Swell, Utah. Looking south across the canyon of the San Rafael River. As far as I can find out the prominent side canyon directly across is unnamed. The inset is a view a bit more to the right. This area isn't _quite_ so remote as it used to be--there are now interpretive signs--but it doesn't get _nearly_ the traffic that Moab does. What 50 miles of dirt road will do! ;)

Muddy with the monsoon. Looking south. The prominent butte on the right is Assembly Hall Peak; Window Blind Peak is the farther one on the left. San Rafael Swell, Utah.

Looking east from the Wedge Overlook, San Rafael Swell, Utah. This is sometimes called the Grand Canyon of the San Rafael, for reasons that probably are obvious ;)

Side view, showing how it's actually a suspension bridge. Apparently it swayed considerably when it was open to automobile traffic! As detailed in the adjacent photo, it was built by the CCC in the 1930s. Photo from the new automobile bridge.

Over the San Rafael River in central Utah, USA. Built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s as part of Roosevelt's New Deal. It's been replaced by a new bridge for vehicle traffic, but is still open for non-motorized travel.

Looking upstream from by the bridge on the way to Buckhorn Canyon. San Rafael Swell, Utah, USA. Nothing like 30 miles of dirt road to filter out the crowds! ;) The San Rafael is a tributary of the Green River, meeting it about 15 miles south of Green River, UT. It's often dry in the lower part; here it's muddy with the monsoon rains.

San Rafael River in the San Rafael Swell, Utah, USA. A remote area, despite its relative proximity to Moab. Dirt roads sure filter out the crowds! Scan of an old negative; gotta get back there with the digital camera one of these days--
