Mt. Etna and Flag Tree

Guess the direction of the prevailing wind! Looking southeasterly off the Pacific Crest Trail in California, near the vague northern end of the Sierra Nevada. Mt. Etna has been mapped as a volcanic plug. The name may come from a nostalgic 49er! The Sierra Buttes are peeking out just barely on the left.

No, not _that_ Mt. Etna! This is a low peak off the Pacific Crest Trail in California, toward the vague northern end of the Sierra Nevada. It's been mapped as a volcanic plug. I don't know how it got that name--maybe a 49er with a taste for the classics! The inset shows a view from a distance, with a nice flag tree for foreground interest.

Nice it's officially recognized!

Near the little town of Crawford, Colorado. An eroded-out volcanic neck related to West Elk volcanism, ca. 28 million years ago. The inset shows another view, plus the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) informational sign. Nice that it's not going to be developed!
