Rock Creek Dam

On the North Fork of the Feather River, California. The highway to the left is California SR 70; the railroad on the right is the old Western Pacific line ("the Feather River route"), now part of the Union Pacific and still in use. Unlike the Middle Fork, the North Fork is definitely a "harnessed" river, with a chain of hydropower structures extending all along it from about here to the head of Lake Oroville. The construction dates from the early-mid 20th century, and of course thoroughly trashed the original salmon run--but such things weren't much of a consideration back then. Telephoto view from the Three Lakes access road well above the canyon; the location is of the dam itself rather than the photo point.

Feather River, North Fork

Thank you Captain Obvious--

Sign along the flooding North Fork of the Feather River, California. Due to the extraordinary water season, the river is pretty much a continuous series of Class V rapids, except where interrupted by some small power dams.

Greeley Crossing

Down in the drainage, where the road crosses the North Fork of the Little Humboldt River, which is emerging from the canyon to the left. In extreme northern Nevada, maybe 20 miles from the Oregon line. As far as I've been able to determine, this was an old stage route, probably from Boise, Idaho to connect to the transcontinental railroad at Winnemucca, Nevada. It's now a graded (not paved!) county road. The white spot just to the right of the canyon mouth is the roof of an abandoned shed. The insert was taken from below the canyon, looking up. There was even running water this early in the season!

The Mighty Little Humboldt

With water and everything! Actually, it's just the North Fork of the Little Humboldt, but that leads to too long a title for an embedded note. Where it emerges from its canyon above Greeley Crossing. Northern Humboldt County, Nevada.

Grand Canyon of the North Fork of the Little Humbo…

Well, yes. It's kind of a cumbersome name, and it's not official. But it seemed appropriate! This canyon is little known and doesn't even have any vehicle access, but has its charms. It's now part of a wilderness study area. There is a vague drainage divide around here, too; the Little Humboldt drains into the Great Basin, but a few miles north the drainages flow into the Owyhee, which flows into the Snake, which then joins the Columbia. The inset has another view--I couldn't decide which I liked better.

North Fork Yuba River

Looking upstream from the footbridge where it's crossed by the Pacific Crest Trail. Just off California State Route 49 near the Sierra Buttes, in the northern Sierra Nevada. The flow is better than in the pic a couple of weeks previously because of a recent storm.

Folded!

The sign's been there so long that the bark growing under it has almost bent it in half! The tree is a western red cedar. Just off the Pacific Crest Trail where it crosses the North Fork of the Yuba River on a footbridge. In fact, the sign says "North Fork Yuba." Northern Sierra Nevada, California, USA.

North Fork, Yuba River

Below the Sierra Buttes in the northernmost part of the Sierra Nevada, California, where the Pacific Crest Trail crosses it on a footbridge. The river was flowing much better a couple of weeks later due to a winter storm. It's still in drought, however.
